Yep, even as my kids have gotten bigger (and my son is now 19 years old and 6\u2032 3\u2033 tall) they still troop on in to get a picture with Santa for their mom. Best kids ever!\u00A0Last year was the last year for Hollidazzle parade, changing to this year\u2019s\u00A0Hollidazzle Village. Messing with holiday traditions can be a tricky thing, but\u00A0we need to leave room for traditions to grow and change while keeping the core of why it was important to your family.\nThe most common question I receive from families newly diagnosed with food allergies is how to manage the holidays. We all have food traditions strongly tied to our holiday memories and want to preserve them for our children and ourselves. When food allergies or celiac enter the picture, holidays can seem like an overwhelming obstacle instead of a chance to rest and renew with our family. My suggestion? Make a dinner you know everyone already enjoys, and isn\u2019t too difficult to make that satisfies your allergy restrictions. Then, ask you family (our yourself) what is the one dish that would help make it feel like Christmas. Make that one thing and have the whole family pitch in to help. Every year, just adapt one recipe as you choose to, but don\u2019t sweat it if it doesn\u2019t turn out exactly as you planned. You may just create a new tradition of your own!\nFor my family, Swedish Rye Bread was what was requested, and honestly, the first year my gluten free yeasted breads were VERY odd. I should have gone with a more forgiving muffin with similar spices, but I was stubborn determined. Never mind that all my yeasted gluten free breads where lopsided\u2026 That Christmas just the smell of the spices and the parts we were able to nibble (around the sunk in center) were delicious simply because we tried to make it together. And, boy, did my son (who was 6 at the time) laugh and laugh at the funny looking bread. \U0001F642 That is a Christmas memory I cherish. Not the oddly shaped bread, but the time we took to try to make it together and the laughter we shared when it didn\u2019t go as we planned. You can always right-click and save-as to download the show for listening later.\n\nKing Cake\u00A0Traditions & Carnival Season\n\nKing Cake Recipe\n Save Print Mardi Gras King Cake Recipe Author: Jeff Young Cuisine:\u00A0Creole Recipe type:\u00A0Dessert Ingredients 2 packets of active dry yeast (4\u00BD teaspoons) \u00BD cup granulated sugar 1-1/2 sticks of butter, melted (Kerrygold) 1 cup warm milk (about 110 F) 5 large egg yolks, room temperature 4\u00BD cups of all-purpose flour (King Arthur) 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon oil (regular olive oil) 1 lb. cream cheese, room temperature 3\u00BD cups confectioner\u2019s sugar 1 plastic king cake baby or pecan half 5 tablespoons milk, room temperature 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice Purple, green, and yellow food coloring Instructions FOR THE DOUGH Combine the yeast and the granulated sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. If you don\u2019t have a stand mixer, don\u2019t worry, you can do the same thing by hand in a large mixing bowl. Add melted butter and warm milk and beat for one minute at medium-low speed. With the mixer still running, add the egg yolks and beat for another minute. Add the flour, salt, nutmeg, and lemon zest and beat until everything is incorporated. Increase the speed to high and beat until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and forms a ball (or starts to climb up the dough hook). As with any dough, you may have to add water (a tablespoon at a time) or more flour to get the right results. Remove the dough from the bowl and, using your hands, form it into a smooth ball. Using regular olive oil (not extra virgin), lightly oil a large mixing bowl. Place the dough in the bowl, rolling it around to coat it on all sides with oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm, draft-free place for about 2 hours. You want the dough to double in size. Once the cake has doubled in size, remove the plastic wrap or towel and brush the surface of the cake with 2 tablespoons of milk. Place cake in oven and bake 25 to 30 minutes, until it is golden brown. Remove from the oven and place the cake on a wire rack so that it can cool completely. When it is completely cooled, insert the plastic baby, or pecan half, from the bottom of the cake.
