The team of porters and guides that Justin (the owner) arranged were amazing. So warm, friendly and welcoming and always concerned with my health and how I was doing along the way. Every morning they would sing to me to cheer me on for the days hike. No other company on the mountain did that. On the worst days this helped me push through. After I made it to Uhuru peak they baked me a cake in the middle of one of our camp sites with nothing but a few ingredients and a small flame. I have no idea how they did it but it was the sweetest gesture and no other company did that. I could not have been more safe with this group of champion porters, guides and the cook. One of the greatest experiences of my life. I paid a fraction of the cost of what I would have paid for other companies and got so much more than I could have ever imagined. If you are looking for a company to climb Kili, look no further. When I went there last year there was plenty of snow (didn't stop snowing for 3 days!) and cold weather. The skiing mountain itself doesn't have any accommodation at the bottom (correct me if I'm wrong) but the nearby Olympic host Lake Placid town is a perfect base. The skiing is VERY good for the eastern seaboard as there is a massive variety and very good count of pistes for such an unknown resort. I’ve owned for about the last 12 and skied there extensively. Clearly, seasons do vary in terms of snow quality. Many of the comments below don’t seem to appreciate this. The skiing is good. I would not say excellent. There is certainly a wide range for all levels if you really want some more challenging and exciting skiing. Well worth hiring a guide who will take you over the back of Pic Blanc off-piste. This powderbowl rivals any I’ve skied in. The runs to results are ideal for beginners; moguls clearly only appear when there’s been a lot of skiing and not fresh snow so the Surrender is full of moguls when conditions allow this. Some of the best off-piste is down towards Vaujany area. Try Obar and Indianna in the old village; both are slightly less full. The restaurant next to Obar is, in my opinion, the best in the resort. Very different feel to Val d'Isere: far fewer English teenagers throwing up and demanding kebabs! Good family resort. Probably not the liveliest at night time that you can go to. The chutes were at their best. The amazing steep fall line with sifted snow and few other skiers is always a treat. The flight was an easy 1 hour 20 mins from Gatwick and the transfer an hour and a half through picture postcard landscape.\r\n\r\nWe had a three bedroom apartment for two couples at Panorama, half way up the mountain and with a small easy piste passing 50 metres from the apartment. It was nearly ski in ski out.\r\n\r\nThe apartment had spectacular views over the pistes to the valley below. We were self-catering so had to be well organised with the food shopping, but a combination of expeditions via the ski bus and daily visits to the well-stocked shop at the Alpin Lodge, to pop basics in the back pack, did the trick. The rep also organised a food welcome pack which was a great touch.\r\n\r\nAs four older adults, a pitcher of beer for ‘after-ski’ watching some great live bands for an hour or two, was plenty. Then back home and into the sauna. Drink is very expensive in Norwegian bars, but so it is in the Alps. However, low strength beer, in the supermarkets, is similar to UK. With some duty free gin from Gatwick we were sorted. It was also possible to walk up to the beautiful hotel for a £9 pint, or a posh meal with spectacular views.\r\n \r\nThe skiing was perfect for four cautious skiers, plenty of easy long wide greens with good elevation. The piste map shows a green from the top of the highest mountain ‘Totten’, but I would say this was a challenging blue, near red, in parts down to mid station, having said that there is plenty of good easy skiing from the top of the 8 chair express lift, from mid-station down. The pistes were nearly empty during the week, very wide in parts and lift queues were rare, in all very relaxing skiing.\r\n\r\nWe were lucky with the snow, when we arrived they had three weeks of heavy snow previously and we had several inches of snow every night and light flurries during the day. The last three days was knee high champagne powder. The temperature was -10 to -15, which is manageable with the right kit. The ski gear was easy to hire as there was a shop, ten minutes’ walk up to the Skarsnuten Hotel.\r\n\r\nCrystal Holidays were very good with an excellent resort rep, offering lots of exciting non-skiing options such as dog sledging etc. Having done these trips before in Finland and being on a tight budget we did not partake, but there was plenty to keep non-skiers amused. Being out of town and up the mountain meant that one had to be savvy with the ski bus timetable, but as we were at home every evening it was not an issue.\r\n\r\nWith a late flight on the Sunday we were able to ski in the morning which was a bonus and in all, by avoiding partying the night away, this was an excellent value for money ski holiday. Although there are negatives associated with skiing Temple (rope tows, avalanche danger, difficult access to some of the very best terrain, sharing dorm rooms). However, these things may not sound like negatives to some. The very best terrain here is 'experts only' so for some that is a big plus. \r\n\r\nIf you are an intermediate to advanced skier there is fun to be had, though more limited. It might, however, be a place to try and introduce yourself to bigger mountain skiing; deeper powder, steeper slopes, chutes, climb-only accessed terrain. It really has it all for a budding big mountain rider or alpinist. The scenery is also spectacular on a good day, though the weather is quite unpredictable I would imagine. Stayed at the Park Inn hotel which was excellent although a little isolated from both the main resort and the smaller \"high\" village; which isn't really an issue if you keep within the hotel itself. Accommodation is either in a few big hotels which are ski-in-out or chalets which can be some distance from the slopes, but a free ski-bus (with lift pass) that tours around so you can always get home no matter where you stay. \r\n\r\nMountain has three sides, the \"sunny\" side (to the left of the ski map) which tends to be more popular and has lots of long open intermediate runs. The middle section which is where the black runs are and the colder \"right\" side which gets far less sun and tends to hold up better later in the day although can be a bit icy. The right side has far more beginner slopes and tends to be more popular with families. Overall, there is a good mix of runs for all abilities and some decent black runs in the middle section that are very very quiet. I would recommend spending the first day taking a tour of the mountain and working out what suits you best. There is usually an easy way down most runs so you can usually get off a difficult run if you get lost.\r\n\r\nThe lifts are very well maintained and if you avoid the local holidays there are hardly any queues; most times you can ski right onto the lift. \r\n\r\nApres-ski in the ski-village is busy as there aren't a lot of places to go. But the main village of Tyrsil is a bit further away and was very quiet when I visited. Prices were eye-wateringly high (but then everything is expensive in Norway) so remember to stock up on the duty free on the way in and save a few $$'s on going out; spirits are particularly expensive in Norway. It has easy and difficult runs but go there low season to enjoy it because during high season it's extremely busy, especially when all the little ski areas in the region are shut due to lack of snow; queueing for 30 mins for 10 mins or less skiing is common. We've been twice,and experienced excellent snow conditions but you need patience waiting for uplift. The Arber is beautifully forested and the runs are scenic. Accommodation locally is excellent and good value with superb food. We have been skiing in Europe every year for 16 years. We purchased the 6 day ViaLattea ski pass. It snowed one day and was very windy. Sestriere basically only opened the bunny hill so we didn't ski. Next 2 days they didn't open the gondola or various other chairs. We felt that they were doing it to save money as we were held captive to their area. After the 3rd day of being held captive, we took a taxi around the mountain and went to Montgenevre. Agreed it was windy but all the lifts were open there. We found other people complained online previously of the same thing at Sestriere. For those who believe the tour operator blurb, l suggest you try the off-piste north face of the Haermelekopf to correct that misconception. It's tougher than the back side of Valluga and no Brits have heard of it! Simply awesome and a must but only with a guide!\r\n\r\nThe ski area is small but there is plenty to keep you from getting bored. The are two hills, firstly the much overlooked Gschwandtkopt which, whilst only having a vertical of 1,000 ft, has fantanstic undulating terrain which can catch you out if you're not concentrating. It's so good the Axel Lund-Swindel uses it for training. The World Cup is in nearby Garmisch. Better still, over half the hill has no artificial snow, so no ice just grippy powder when conditions are right. Ever better the hill is deserted on the Moesern and Reith sides. It really is millionaires skiing!\r\n\r\nThe Rosshutte is the other ski area and more akin to most Brits idea of the ski mountain with 3,000 ft vertical and a mixture of mostly reds and blues with two short and not to steep blacks. \r\n\r\nSubsistance on the mountain is vey good value: Spag bog and half a litre of beer at the charming Hochegg Alm is only 9.70 euros. France take note! \r\n\r\nMost people come to Seefeld for the winter walking and cross-country skiing; this makes the alpine skiing so much better as all the slopes are quiet, even at peak times.\r\n\r\nWe stayed at the excellent Hotel Schoenruh which is a 5 star hotel in all but name and managed by the excellent Christoph Gruber who cannot do enough for the guests. The Hotel is owned by the Kaltschmid family. It is one of a number of first class hotels they own in the resort, and affords exceptional value. Top rooms are exceptional and only 126 euros pp per night for threequarter board. You can only dream of these prices in France!\r\n\r\nThe town is genteel with apres-ski concentrated around the Fledermaus bar but with such a first class hotel it's largely irrelevant.\r\n\r\nFor someoine who is an Ischgl fan, Seefeld was a revelation, so much so we will repeat the trip next year. \r\n\r\nMeanwhile, Ischgl beckons for a week of hard skiing and even harder apres-ski from 9 March. Double black legendary runs include Balfour on Tasman for steep and deep, and if you're lucky to be at the top of Aoraki when patrol drops the rope on Sheila, it has a heart thumping drop for the real enthusiasts. Not enough is reported on the terrain below Pioneer. Tired punters can follow the cat track that zigzags 900 vertical down Haast ridge, while the new Hochstetter terrain park will also deliver you toward the base. For a longer adventure, try Lender field off Tasman and following a coffee and a sit in front of the gas heater at Pioneer hut, continue down to the road on the backside. Transport can be arranged back around to the Mt Cook car park, or try a short helicopter flight. Vertical can range from 2700m on the main mtn, to 2500m on the backside.
