Decisive for the design of an inclusive play space is the degree of self-determination of the users - i.e. the question of how severe the limitation is and what is possible without outside help.</p><p>Of course, it is possible to design playground equipment that is tailored to specific needs or user groups, such as special equipment for wheelchair users. Basically, however, as little special equipment as possible is desirable for inclusive play spaces; for one thing, this is often disproportionately expensive, and for another, it can only be used by a few - and this in turn can ultimately also lead to isolation instead of integration. These considerations ultimately lead to the concept of focusing on playground equipment that can be used by as many different people as possible. The goal should be that everyone can immerse themselves in play together and on an equal footing, help each other and learn from each other. </p><p>In the Irish town of Ballymena, such an inclusive play world and thus a special place was created in 2017 for the playground of Castle Tower School. Pupils, parents and teachers work closely together at the inclusive school, which also and especially accepts physically and mentally impaired children. The question of what it really means to have an inclusive society is always present. The staff at Castle Tower School constantly strive to promote learning while developing respect and tolerance and preparing very special young people for life after school.</p><p>Together with the school's teaching staff, a project with a showcase character*) has been realised: on the spacious school grounds there are numerous pieces of equipment that have a strong integrative effect. In the nest cradle, for example, several children can lie together and enjoy the gentle rocking back and forth in the nest, as long as it is set in motion by children or caregivers who are also playing. The playhouse, platform and extra-wide slide invite children to enjoy simple joint climbing and movement experiences. In addition, there is plenty of room for role play. The ground-level sounding bodies of the whistle seesaw not only create cheerful sounds by running or bouncing back and forth, but this is also possible by driving on them with a wheelchair. </p><p></p><p>There is also a special carousel for wheelchair users, which gives the children great pleasure through the spinning movements and the feeling of the wind and centrifugal force. The children experience carefree moments together on the train and the swing horse. And the wiggly sheep has a special attraction, especially for mentally and emotionally impaired children - the warm, soft poplar wood with its mossy feel and the gentle wiggling of the animal invite them to stroke, hug, ride and cuddle it. </p><p>In this special school in Ireland, the children succeed in developing alternative skills through play that help to expand their limited lives. And at the same time, all the equipment with these same developmental possibilities can also be used by children who no longer have the restriction. You realise that it is only the way of playing that makes the difference. This is only possible to a very limited extent at home.</p><p></p><p>It is important that we give everyone - from toddlers to pensioners - access to their own physical activity. And not only in schools or sports clubs, but directly in the personal environment, as close to home as possible. It is important to create areas that not only offer opportunities, but at the same time also create incentives to move.</p><p></p><p>Play and movement in the company of other people is an important social factor - because moving together increases motivation, duration and above all the enjoyment of the activity in most cases. This is one of the reasons why many amateur athletes outside the club world are organized in smaller or larger groups to be active together outdoors. Publicly accessible exercise areas and playgrounds enable social and communicative participation of all population groups in the spaces. They prevent the exclusion of children and young people due to a lack of financial resources. They enable participation, involvement, and equal opportunities for movement activities in everyday life outside of commercial offers. Attractive and demand-oriented movement and play areas can lead to a revitalization of residential neighborhoods, enhance city centers and town centers, and contribute to an improvement of the residential environment. The areas are thus an indispensable contribution to urban quality of life. It has been proven that play and exercise facilities contribute to improving infrastructures suitable for children, families, and the elderly, to increasing cohesion in the urban district and to improving the integration of disadvantaged population groups and people with a migration background. Therefore, such facilities are an important building block within the framework of an integrated urban development concept and district work. They thus have an extraordinarily high and positive spatial planning steering effect and increase identification with a district.</p><p></p><p>A movement-friendly infrastructure within the municipality means more than just an expansion of pedestrian and bicycle paths. To meet the needs of a large part of the population, stimulating exercise areas close to home are of great importance. For large parts of the population to have the chance to promote their own physical activity through these facilities, it is important that they are easily accessible. The shorter the distance from the home to an exercise area, the more the options will be used. It is not the citizen who has to look for the physical activity space, but he should encounter it, in as many places as possible. If travelling to distant places is not possible, they must also find appealing places for play, sport and exercise &quot;at home&quot; in their hometown. Active leisure time activities must be guaranteed close to home. And that everywhere and for everyone without the individual having to pay a contribution to costs.</p><p>Self-responsible health care must also be possible for everyone - equal living conditions should play an important role in our society. And installations close to home have another benefit - they also offer ecological advantages if people do not have to travel far for their leisure activities. Urban play and exercise areas with green spaces make an important contribution to the urban microclimate. They enable air exchange, reduce urban overheating, reduce the degree of sealing of urban ground surfaces, improve the water storage capacity of the soil, provide shade with a tree population and can be a contribution to networked vegetation islands in the urban area. In times of increasing building densification of urban spaces, play and movement areas can be used to secure space for indispensable green areas. These green areas play an important ecological role for living organisms, air quality and quality of stay in urbanized areas. Urban planning experience shows that once green spaces for play and exercise have been converted, they are lost forever!</p><p></p><p>Play, sport and physical activity must be elementary components of the life of every person in our society. Therefore, cities and municipalities must not restrict these areas through austerity measures. The association promotes the manufacture of play and leisure facilities that are produced in a resource-conserving and environmentally friendly manner. Innovative materials and technologies are used to ensure a high durability of the facilities while minimizing the ecological footprint.</p><p></p><p>As an expression of the high-quality standards and expertise of its members, the BSFH has established a seal of quality. This certificate distinguishes playground and leisure facilities that meet the association's high requirements. It combines expertise, organizational knowledge, and craftsmanship excellence to ensure that playgrounds meet the highest quality and safety standards.</p><p></p><p></p><p>New quality seal for more transparency and quality assurance</p><p></p><p>The number of suppliers on the market of playground and fitness equipment is continuously growing - be it in the field of production and planning, assembly and maintenance or production of necessary fall protection materials. Low-cost suppliers from the Far East are increasingly trying to penetrate this market through imitations and aggressive dumping prices. This leads not only to an intensification of competition among the suppliers, but also to an increasing lack of transparency from the customer's point of view. It is becoming increasingly difficult for clients to distinguish good quality and high professional competence from market participants with inferior products or services.</p><p>To counteract this development, the BSFH has now presented a new seal of quality for its members. From now on, they can receive the BSFH seal of quality based on a detailed test procedure in the areas of social responsibility, organizational structure and professional competence.</p><p></p><p>Within the scope of the test procedure, the companies must answer numerous questions within these three categories and partly substantiate them with written and pictorial evidence. Among other things, it is checked whether or to what extent production takes place in Germany, how high the percentage of recyclable materials is within the products or, for example, whether safety certificates are available for most a company's standard products. Each question is weighted with a score. &quot;To ensure the appropriate value of the seal, each of the three categories must be passed individually. While people from around the world are coming to terms with the health, economic and social ramifications of the virus, many businesses in the sports and entertainment industry are taking unprecedented steps to make their venues Covid-secure and start planning to welcome supporters back once again. From our global experience and round table discussions with regulators, governmental bodies, owners, and operators, this article outlines the key areas and strategies that we have seen within the industry and seeks to shed light on what the future might look like for Covid-secure sports venues around the world.</p><p><b>Flexible scenario planning</b></p><p></p><p>From the beginning of the pandemic, with some areas hit in late 2019, it was immediately clear that any reopening and business solution for venues would require full stakeholder engagement. Even before reaching the specific needs of your own venue, it is essential to take the following into account:</p><p><ul data-list-attributes=""><li>recommendations from national and international health bodies;</li><li>guidelines from local and national government;</li><li>future risks, as yet unknown.</li></ul></p><p>Almost every league, federation, or event around the world has adopted an approach to spectator and fan safety in the face of this global pandemic. However, as the virus spreads at different rates around the world, from town to town and continent to continent, so the specific approach will change dependent on location but also over time.</p><p></p><p>“This is very much an issue of immediate risk assessment,” says Sherri Privitera, Populous Senior Principal and Americas regional board member. “While we are seeing some leagues open to a small number of fans, others have called off the whole season. As designers we can help those who make these really big decisions see their specific situation in the light of their current national health and government guidelines.”</p><p></p><p>As well as differences from town to town, things can also change quickly within a location, according to Populous Senior Principal and EMEA sector lead Mark Craine. “The UK Government is making national and regional decisions based on the data that is changing right in front of them. This means that while we can prepare everything in advance for one scenario, a sudden change will often mean that a full reassessment is required in a short period of time. Having multiple options and advanced scenario planning while also developing time saving strategies and tools has been key supporting venues in this new constantly changing environment.”</p><p><b>Health &amp; safety</b></p><p>Entrance management in event locations</p><p></p><p>While always a key consideration for stadiums around the world, creating a safe and Covid-secure environment is now a vital requirement for every venue, be it large or small, sporting or otherwise. Stadiums are incredibly tactile spaces and considering the specification of materials that limit the potential for viruses to linger on surfaces will be vital in all return to venue plans. This will naturally also be linked to enhanced cleaning and maintenance regimes, that will operate before, during and after matches.</p><p></p><p>Upon arrival, all visitors are likely to be met with a range of health testing procedures. From “health passports” linked to digital ticketing to digital thermometers, the entrance to a venue will be a vital threshold to protecting and maintaining all of a stadium’s internal Covid-secure policies and processes. “This is going to be a really important space for every venue,” says Chris Paterson, Populous Senior Principal in the APAC region. “Physical safety and security have long been a priority at stadiums around the world, and a lot of work has gone into making these spaces safe as well as welcoming. Whatever the ¬capacity of a stadium going forwards, the temporary overlay of these spaces to meet these new immediate needs is going to be crucial in safeguarding all attendees.”</p><p><b>Arrival</b></p><p>Admission control to event locations</p><p></p><p>Flexibility, both physical and organisational, will be key going forwards in a post-pandemic world. The new normal begins before any fan or spectator even leaves their home. Public transport and road restrictions may affect every individual and must be addressed with the relevant authorities prior to any event. Around the world, most stadiums will use a multi-modal transport strategy, with a range of different providers from private individuals to trains and buses, to get fans to the venue.</p><p></p><p>Meanwhile, the technological advancement that we have seen in stadiums over the past decade has made it easier for them to quickly adapt as venues plan for some fans to return, often at reduced capacities and with stringent health and safety measures in place. Digital wayfinding systems, ticketless entry, and cashless transaction systems have all been put to use as we find ways that grounds around the world can begin to zone their stadiums, to serve all the needs of fans whilst allowing for social distancing and limiting physical touch points during their venue visit.</p><p></p><p>The key priority for all venues, then, must be in keeping people moving and avoiding queues. Techniques to achieve this could include:</p><p><ul data-list-attributes=""><li>using targetted temperature screening at entrances to minimise queues into the stadium;</li><li>retaining all toilet fixtures to minimise queues in toilets;</li><li>additional options for click and collect or delivery to seat for food and beverages in concourses.</li></ul></p><p></p><p><b>Restarting, reopening and adapting</b></p><p></p><p>One similarity that can be seen around the world as venues plan for the future is the need for bespoke solutions. While approaches can be adopted in common, solutions need to be tailored to fit each and every case – and need to have back-up built in. As Al Baxter, Populous Principal in APAC tells us, every client and venue will need a range of possible solutions. “We have seen so many nuanced requirements come out of the hundreds of meetings that we have had with our contacts as they prepare to reopen into this ‘new normal’,” Baxter says. “While many of these needs can be grouped together, the design solution is anything but homogenous.”</p><p></p><p>And change comes quickly. For example, an extensive and thoroughly evaluated plan on Friday may be made -redundant come game day on Sunday should local circumstances or national guidelines change. “We always knew that people in our business were resilient,” says Scott Capstack, Principal in the Americas region, “but we have seen first-hand some incredibly clever and strategic approaches to ensure that fans and spectators remain safe and secure, from the moment they arrive at a venue until the moment they leave.”</p><p><b>Venues within a venue</b></p><p>Seat occupancy in the stadium during the Corona Pandemic</p><p></p><p>The longer that the pandemic affects all areas of the sporting world, the clearer it seems that venue operators are going to have to be flexible on both their capacities and their strategies for moving people around the internal and external spaces of their buildings.</p><p>Stadiums are designed for people, whether it is 5,000 or 100,000. There is an experience in being in a stadium, in close proximity to thousands of other fans, that is perhaps unique to sports and entertainment. The atmosphere of this environment is key. But how do you replicate this when the capacity is 30%, 20%, or even lower? The goal of the “venue within a venue” approach is to work with governmental guidelines and tracking and tracing guidelines to create a “stadium” experience whilst limiting contact between fans before, during, and after matches. As Tom Jones, Senior Principal in the EMEA region notes “This builds on our current approach of designing a range of spaces and experiences into stadiums, so we have already been able to identify many situations where all of the concessions and hospitality spaces within a stadium can be made accessible to smaller groups through strategic and digital wayfinding and temporary barriers.</p><p><b>Conclusion</b></p><p>Safety and health concepts for visiting venues during the Corona pandemic</p><p>All surveys point to keen demand to return to live sport, however governments are understandably cautious about the public health issues relating to the safety of groups of people meeting in stadiums. Hopefully the feedback and analysis of test events around the world can help to give confidence that stadiums can start to welcome fans back to venues in a safe and controlled way, with suitable protocols and procedures that can give confidence to players, officials and spectators.</p><p></p><p>One key question will be which of the changes that are required to respond to this pandemic are temporary, or whether they will be a marker for more permanent changes in the design and operation of stadiums. "<p>Bei der Neuplanung und Umsetzung des Spielbereiches »Museum Oberschönenfeld« wird auch deutlich, wie die Anforderungen der neuen DIN 18034 »Spielplätze und Freibereiche zum Spielen« in der Praxis umgesetzt werden können. Der öffentlich nutzbare Spielbereich richtet sich mit vielfältigen naturnahen Angeboten und Spieleinrichtungen an NutzerInnen mit und ohne Behinderungen, an Jung und Alt. Im Sinne von Inklusion und Barrierefreiheit können diese Spiel- und Bewegungsangebote durchaus eine »konventionelle Spielplatzgestaltung« attraktivieren und bereichern. Beim Deutschen SPIELRAUM-Preis 2021 (»Gemeinsam!«) wurde das Projekt mit einem Hauptpreis ausgezeichnet… Für alle Nutzer – mit oder ohne Einschränkungen, Behinderungen, besonderen Fähigkeiten – soll es möglich sein, die Angebote der Spiel- und Erlebnis-Landschaft zu nutzen…</p><p>Vielfalt für Alle</p><p>Über barrierefreie Eingangsbereiche mit taktiler Leittafel, barrierefreien Rundwegen mit durchgängigem Leitsystem und optisch sowie taktil erfassbaren Adaptern (Unikate), können die vielfältig gestalteten Spielbereiche je nach Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten erreicht und genutzt werden. An einer zentralen Bewegungswiese mit Verweilflächen unter Obstbäumen gruppieren sich differenzierte Spiel- und Nutzungsbereiche mit integrierten Leitelementen wie zum Beispiel berollbaren Bodenadaptern oder Greifadaptern im Zwei-Sinne-Prinzip. Der naturnah ausgebaute Bachlauf mit elementaren Wasserspielangeboten, Spielbuchten, flachem Ufer, Sand-Matsch-Bereichen und Sitzterrassen ist größtenteils barrierefrei bespielbar. Mit dem vorhandenen Aushubmaterial der Bauphase entstand ein Kletterhügel mit Steigen aus Baumstämmen, eine weidenüberdachte, breite Hangrutsche und eine Aussichts-Plattform mit Windrad. Ein abwechslungsreicher Balancier- und Bewegungs-Parcours von rund 60 Meter Länge führt zur Hangrutsche.</p><p>Zusammenfassung und Jurystatement</p><p>Das besondere Ambiente des Klosters Oberschönenfeld mit Biergarten und attraktivem Volkskundemuseum im Naturpark »Westliche Wälder Augsburg« erhielt mit dem neugestalteten integrativen, barrierefreien Spielbereich einen weiteren Anziehungspunkt für die Region. Berücksichtigt wurden bei der Planung vielfältige, inklusive und nachhaltige Anregungen der neuen Spielplatz-DIN 18034.</p><p>Ein besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf die Nachhaltigkeit gelegt. Die Verantwortung für Mensch und Natur ist bei vielen Spielplatzbetreibern, Kommunen, Landschaftsarchitekten, Architekten und Teilen der Wirtschaft in der Unternehmensphilosophie und -strategie bereits fest verankert. Angestrebt wird ein hoher Spielwert, Inklusion und Barrierefreiheit für alle Nutzer. </p><p>Durch die Einbindung von Landschaftselementen, Gehölzen und Mineralien wurde das bestehende Spielgelände zu einer inklusiven, barrierefreien Erlebnis-Landschaft für alle weiter entwickelt. Die konsequente Umsetzung bewertete die Jury als überdurchschnittlich. Auch die Zonierung und Anbindung unterschiedlicher funktionaler Räume an einen Rundweg überzeugte die Jury. Der Spielplatz Museum Oberschönenfeld wurde unter der Prämisse geplant, einen Spielplatz für alle Menschen zu gestalten. Daher wurde besonderer Wert auf das Miteinander gelegt. Inklusion kann spielerisch erlernt und gelebt werden – auch dadurch, dass man miteinander Freude erlebt.
