Share A U.S. Marine in World War II, sculptor Fred Schumm has dedicated his life to art and finds inspiration everywhere. Fred Schumm, artist-in-residence November 29, 2007 Fred Schumm does not view life through rose-colored glasses. He doesn't have to. Schumm, Rowan University's artist-in-residence, is a former U.S. Marine who lived through some of the most horrific battles of World War II. He served at Peleliu -- two months of carnage on a tiny Pacific atoll where 12,000 perished - and then four long months on the bloodied isle of Okinawa. Since then, Schumm, 82, has mostly tried to see life's beauty. It's sort of like how sunlight, warm but ordinary to the naked eye, is refracted into myriad, impossibly beautiful combinations of color when viewed through a kaleidoscope. Signed Lebadang (Hoi) was born in Quang Tri, Vietnam in 1922. He moved to France in 1939 to pursue an art career at Ecole de Beaus Arts de Toulouse. While studying there he was awarded prizes for painting, drawing, and sculpture and won his first commission. By 1950 the Paris art community had recognized Lebadang's work, appreciating the blend of European and Far Eastern culture and philosophies reflected in it. The director of the Far Eastern Department at UNESCO commissioned him to illustrate a book of poetry, published by Editions Euros. Lebadang was first represented in the United States, in 1966, with an exhibition of his paintings at the Cincinnati Art Museum. In describing his art today critics remark that it incorporates everyday subjects into dream-like expressions of thought. Lebadang, an accomplished printmaker, favors the techniques of etching, lithograph, and serigraph. He also has done lithographs using the name Hoi. An expert geologist viewed this stone sculpture and asserted that it took 100s of years to be created and was an exceptional specimen. The sandstone specimen sits on a steel pin and steel plate. The piece can be removed from its base for relocation. Condition: Excellent with hairline cracks that are consistent with the presumed age of this specimen and from stresses from movement natural or otherwise over the years. There are no major gouges or missing areas on the specimen. The specimen must be handled with great care because of its natural fragility.
