APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND pH BALANCE
Ratings:
|
"It's suggested that Apple Cider Vinegar has such curative abilities because it causes one's pH levels to become more alkaline. If you are going to try apple cider vinegar for allergies, or even to prevent sickness, we suggest you do an investigation of your own by buying a pH test kit at a local pharmacy, garden nursery, or even pool supply store. You can use these kits or pH strips to test your urine to see if you are more alkaline or acid during an allergy attack, virus or bacterial infection. Once you ascertain your pH levels, you can adjust adjust your dosage of Apple Cider Vinegar accordingly.
If you live in a highly polluted area like we do (Los Angeles) where allergies and sinus infections are rampant, your system may better balance itself with a small dose of apple cider vinegar each day. Ultimately we suggest you experiment with a kit to find the pH balance your body functions optimally at. Want to know more about pH? Click here.
Our Bangkok contributor Ted tells us, "Apple Cider Vinegar in itself is alkaline because of its "ash" content, which means if the apple cider vinegar was burned, what is left over becomes ash. When you check for the pH of that ash and dissolve it with water, the content is alkaline. Whenever our body digests anything, it undergoes oxidation, which is similar to burning and the end result is that you can determine whether the end product was alkaline or acid. Apple Cider Vinegar has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties, primarily coming from the malic acid and acetic acid portion of the vinegar. Apple cider vinegar acts as a buffer in the body because the acetic acid reacts with base or acid compounds to form an acetate, therefore rendering them chemically bioavailable for the body's utilization. Additionally, Apple Cider Vinegar can reduce the toxicity of certain compounds by converting the toxin into an acetate compound, which is less toxic. This is why they are ideal for insect bites and certain skin allergies. While Apple Cider vinegar in itself is considered alkaline, a chemically pure vinegar (acetic acid) is neither acid nor basic forming as it leaves no ash as the entire portion, when burned evaporates completely. Ted"
Replies07/08/2009: Sean from Asheville, NC replies: "Hey Ted, Thank you for prompting my curiosity. My understanding was that during digestion of acids the buffering process requires not only enzymes but also minerals to convert the acids before they can be considered anything but acidic. In my mind ACV, and all vinegars, are acidic and that not until they are metabolized are they alkaline. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the metabolic processes of converting ingested food into building material."
11/17/2009: Sugamama from Dallas, Texas replies: "hello, i just started taking apple cider vinegar on this past weekend, it wasn't until i read this article that I understood why I felt the way I did when I drank it. I would drink 1 1/2 tablespoon of acv and I did it twice before a meal and I was no longer hungry after I drank it. I was not diluting my acv with water, I consider myself to be a soldier and didn't feel that mixing it with water was necessary. But if it causes health problems please let me know, but as for now, I will continue to drink it as I do."
12/15/2009: Codysmom from Alexandria, Va replies: "To Sugamom from Dallas, it is best to drink ACV through a straw as the strong acid may erode your teeth enamel. Bottoms Up!"
04/26/2010: Lesly P from Brookhaven, Ms replies: "I use the acv, water, and lemon juice mixture...It gets rid of the tummy fat in less than 3 weeks!"
05/12/2010: Carmen from Demaine, Saskatchewan replies: "Another old school method is to simply not smell the liquid as your drinking it. Just pinch your nostrils with one hand before you put the glass to your lips with the other. I cant say this works 100% - but this combined with the other good suggestions should help a lot. :)"
09/28/2010: Carol from West Monroe, La replies: "If you can't handle the taste of the ACV but don't want to dilute it with water you can always add it with a spoonful of honey. Raw unprocessed honey has a plethora of health benefits of it's own besides just tasting good."
10/20/2010: Toisangirl from Honolulu, Hi replies: "I just discovered a bottle of the Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink (w/ honey) and it comes in flavors like Apple Cinnamon. Drank a bottle this morning in 2 doses about 2 hours apart, and it seems to be opening up my sinus passages; I've been suffering from yet another nasty sinus infection from the island "vog" volcanic ash in the air. I never had sinus infections till I moved to Hawaii. The last time I tried swallowing ACV tablets and they did nothing but cause a bad body odor. Will drinking ACV cause body odor?"
10/25/2010: Lavinia from Liverpool , United Kingdom replies: "Hi all,
I find taking ACV in warm water, is quite refreshing, and not as harsh as taking it in cold water. Wouldn't be without it. Lavinia"
02/19/2011: Sol from Evergreen, Co replies: "For 15 years now, I'll occasionally have a craving for a pickle, and eventually figured out that it's the vinegar that I crave. When I mentioned it to my mother, she said the same thing... About every month, she has to drink some because of her craving. Now I'm consuming it regularly... A few times per week, and I'll often mix it with starchy foods like rice or potatoes. But, I like the comment of the apple cider being mixed with honey as an over the counter drink that someone mentioned on the thread. I've been reading some things about tea having good healthy effects (www.teacupandsaucersets.com) so I've been drinking tea, and now I think I'll try to find a way to mix ACV with tea for the right flavor. Although, does anyone think this might be a bad idea due to the acidity of the ACV affection the teeth? My dentist told me to never sip citrus juices, but rather drink them fast due to their acid levels. Is this possibly also the case with ACV? "
03/12/2011: Nam Marine from Twinsburg, Ohio replies: "ACV for acid reflux:
I take mine with Fruit 2/O, I usually drink this all day. Adding ACV makes it a little bitter, but you get used to it. I am a Diabetic, so this adds no sugar like honey, but it tastes O. K. I had sever pain from my Gerd's, after the first day I used ACV, no more pain! My VA Dr. 's are mistafied!
SEMPER FI!"
03/14/2011: Mellyg from S Jordan , Utah replies: "Just joining in. Should I be taking this ACV at a certain time of day? On empty stomach or with a meal?"
04/08/2011: Kc from Mission, Kansas replies: "I take ACV in supplement form. 300 mg 2x a day w/ a big glass of distilled water and lots of fresh lemon juice. Taste problem solved."
04/19/2011: Golfmaven from Aventura, Florida replies: "Why should ACV be mixed with "distilled water"?"
05/02/2011: Dr. Deb from Huntsville, Al replies: "Reply to Sorrell from Mass:
Looks like I'm a year or so late, but from the symptoms you describe, EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) should be at the TOP of any good doctor's list of things to check for. If you're still around, please do so IMMEDIATELY."
11/30/2011: Joyce from Warwick, Ri replies: "My cousin is a big ACV and water drinker, we did a 26.2 mile walk to raise money for cancer, and she was sipping on the concoction all day. When I asked her about it she explained to me that ACV helps with water absoprtion. In doing some further investigations I found that a popular hangover cure in several Northern European countries is to drink pickle brine, the primary cause of hangover pains being dehydration (and vitamin depletion). I drink it after the gym now, it has the added benefit of helping my acid reflux as well! I can eat tomato sauce again! Luckily I like the taste of vinegar, so no suggestions on how to mask the flavor."
12/05/2011: Katy from Alexandria, Va, Usa replies: "I have been wondering about something for a few days and have been searching the site for an answer.. I haven't found one so far so I am going to get it out there and see if anyone has some insight on the matter. I drink ACV throughout the morning mixed with warm water and honey. I have read that the vinegar itself helps balance the body's pH levels. The vinegar itself is alkaline, however I mix mine with honey which from what I have also read can make the body acidic, I'm guessing from the sugar content.. My question is will the honey cancel out the vinegar regarding the pH balancing? I know the two products can do wonders for health and all, but I'm curious to know if they could also be working against each other with pH in mind. Thanks to all who may have some thought on this."
12/07/2011: Diana from Norfolk, Virginia replies: "I'm a 45 year old female, and have been taking two tablespoons of ACV after breakfast and dinner for over a week now, and it seems to be helping with fluid retention ( keeping the fluids, not getting rid of them ) which seems to be helping the sinus pain from inflammation, which NOTHING was helping. And it's DEFINITELY helping with the heart burn-like stomach pains that kept me from sleeping. I pour it in a small measuring cup and nock it back like a shot of tequila. Not my favorite flavor, and it burns a slight bit going down, but after that, I'm a happy, painless camper! I haven't noticed any other benefits yet, but I haven't been looking out for any. For my two main concerns, I'm a convert and true believer!"
12/08/2011: Ch3cooh from Cleveland, Ohio replies: "Vinegar is not alkaline; quite the contrary, it is quite acidic. In fact it is known by two names chemically. The first being acetic acid. And, the second being ethanoic acid. To my knowledge the combustion products of ethanoic acid are not alkaline, either.
The oxidation process carried out in the body is called The Citric Acid Cycle. It can be viewed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citric_acid_cycleInterestingly enough, vinegar and ethanol (grain alcohol) are closely related. I found this particularly interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_metabolism
I understand that a high pH is generally associated with health and cancer prevention because of cellular respiration and glycolysis. However, vinegar is of a particularly low pH (acidic. ) Please note that this does not negate a health benefit from vinegar. It just makes it a little more confusing :)"
12/12/2011: Emeti from Nyc, Ny replies: "In response to Katy from Alexandria:Honey (like all sugar) make the body acidic, however it has a lesser effect than most sugar available out there (to the exception of Aguave nectar if I remember correctly)
If you only have 2-3 tbsp of honey a day (and very little other sugar) the benefits from natural unprocessed honey will definitely outweight its limited acidity increase.
It is also self understood that if in general you eat an acidifying diet (processed food, meat and little vegetables) even its small acidity increase will have an impact on your health but if in general you have an healthy and alkalyne diet (lots of vegetables and water) it (the honey) will only help you to achieve a healthier lifestyle
For Ch3cooh: You are right that Vinegar is not alkaline, but quite acidic, however, becauce ACV is natural and unpasteurized, it, like fresh lemons have a very strong alkalysing effect on the body, meaning that it helps to get rid of the extra acidity in your body and lower its PH.
Which is also why it says that you should stay away from any refined vinegar as it has a very acidifying effect on the body
Diana from Norfolk: I would strongly recommend you drink it diluted with water and not like a straight shot. or if its too difficult to drink it diluted (because of its taste) add honey to it, or if you chose to continue to drink it straight, rinse your mouth with water afterward (and better swallow some of it, so the acidity doesnt stay on your throat and creates irritation in the long term (and for rinsing your mouth it is to protect your enamel! )
Enjoy and to good health!!"
12/14/2011: Katy from Alexandria, Va replies: "I do know the the vinegar itself is acidic, I mostly meant that it helps to alkalize the body like citrus fruits do. Thanks to all who responded!"
12/21/2011: Alexg from San Antonio, Tx replies: "I drink the ACV like a tea... Boil some water w/ a stick of cinnamon and let that steep 20 min, then add ACV, honey and lemon. Makes it taste better! :) And the medicinal properties of cinnamon helps me as well. :)"
[YEA] 12/22/2011: Lucy from Malta replies: "I've been taking ACV for the last two years and it's amazing how wonderful I feel... My headaches/regular migraine attacks/nearly disappeared... I am hardly sick with flu and my sinuses are absolutely clear... Now I rinse my hair with diluted ACV and it's so shiny and fresh.... Heartily recommend for anything...vinegar/Honey and ACV/ in winter to boost your immune system."
12/28/2011: Kermel_mocha from Staten Island, Ny, United States replies: "Hey all. Can you take ACV while pregnant?"
12/29/2011: Courtney from Beverly Hills, California replies: "I often dilute with water and add some cinnamon after a run. It's like apple cider. Yum. "
12/29/2011: Randy from Fremont, Ca replies: "Scabies Mites are totally confused by my taking ACV and diluting it 1/4 with distilled water in a small spray bottle acquired from Tap Plastics. This small spray bottle unlike garden varieties, atomizes the spray so that it goes on very dry, but covers well.I sprayed my entire body with the solution.
I have tried a lot of different things, the latest of which was Mitactin which although effective, dries out (my) skin terribly so that I am peeling in every part of my body where I felt the colonies were forming. (scabies burrow under skin and lay eggs)
Day 1:
I still feel them on my body but they are no longer biting, having sprayed every square inch, ears, all orifices (has to be done) they are like a benign tumor. Present (and still creepy) but virtually harmless. The ACV is a good tool to determine if indeed it is working as fresh bites will sting when the ACV is applied. At about 18 hours and after a much needed sleep, they just don't seem interested in the blood that tastes like vinegar.
My next step in alleviating this apparent infestation is in the use of Permetherin and 6 mice placed in cages throughout facility. I have a large square footage shop and have no idea where the pockets of infestation are. By taking cotton balls and soaking them with Permetherin available at REI (known to kill mites) and allowing cotton to completely dry, the cotton is placed in the mice cage where the mouse will use it to burrow a nest. I had a real problem ethically with this "sacrificial lamb" idea until I discovered the Permetherin. The warmth of the blood of the mice and being at ground level cages will attract the mites, who once exposed to the Permetherin in the cotton balls will perish. It was either this or try to get a 1000 square foot facility up to 140 degrees F, to attain thermal death of mites, and that just did not work. Barely broke 100 deg.
I hope this helps anyone happening upon my experimentation. I was very scared as scabies are so agressive and were taking over my body, so this proactive approach has been good in more than just a physical way, taking the helplessness and hopelessness out of the picture."
[YEA] 12/30/2011: Tany from Bradford, Wy, Uk replies: "Hi all, I have been taking ACV for some time after I had a few health issues. My Cholesterol results were very good after ACV. I know it works as I used to go to the gym. Since taking ACV I somewhat sweat so much, because of the ACV.I've started again and now during football, I sweat the most, even though I'm not the youngest or the fastest of players."
01/02/2012: Cydney from Flower Mound, Tx replies: "I was wondering if you drink the regular ole apple cider vinegar from the grocery store or do you need to get "Braggs organic" from a Health Food store? Is there a difference other than 1 is organic?"
01/03/2012: Matt from Cooper City, Fl replies: "You will definitely need the organic one, like from Braggs as it contains something special called the 'Mother'. This 'Mother' is made up of living nutrients. You can very well see it float around when you shake the bottle. I usually get it from GNC. The one you find in Grocery stores is refined one and does not contain the 'mother'. Good Luck."
01/04/2012: Kevel from Marysville, Washington replies: "Hey everyone. I'm only 21 and turning 22 in a few weeks and I feel my health is robbing me of my youth. I'm am plagued with digestive issues for about a year now and my doctor told me that I may have functional dyspepsia and mild ibs. I also have acne issues. And just two months ago I started to have symptoms of acid reflux like the throat sensation and chest tightness after eating. I felt miserable and helpless so I searched the internet for remedies and came across the apple cider vinegar remedy for heartburn and reflux. I started drinking bragg's AVC about 1 tablespoon mixed in a glass of water roughly 8-10 oz twice a day. It is about a week and a half since I started drinking the AVC and so far there are no improvements. I still have reflux symptoms after eating, acne flare ups and loose stools (which is maybe due to the detox effect of the AVC). I'm just wondering how much time does it take for me to see improvements or am I taking the wrong dosage of AVC? thank you guys a lot."
01/05/2012: Doreen from Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia replies: "Could anyone tell me if there is a difference whether you drink lemon/lime juice, or ACV in your water? Do they both do the same thing? Is lemon or lime juice as good as ACV?Thanks."
01/15/2012: Leehofook from Plainville, Ct replies: "I did the obvious: I mixed the ACV with apple cider. It gives the cider a great kick and makes it a fantastic drink, and you don't even notice the ACV going down!"
01/22/2012: Laura from Jefferson, Wisconsin United States replies: "Delicious with tea. Works well with some teas, better with others. I have tried many.MY FAVORITES: White tea with a little pomegranate juice; or raspberry tea. To either, add a teaspoon or two of apple cider vinegar. The vinegar actually ENHANCES the flavor of these two teas. Thats right, it makes them taste better. :-)
I have found it does not always taste well with green tea, however certain flavored green teas pair well. Such as the one I am drinking right now. It is called antioxidant max dragonfruit green tea. Made by Celestial Seasonings, the same brand that makes Sleepytime tea. It isn't organic and it does contain 'flavor' but it tastes great with the ACV and contains more antioxidants than other green teas, so I will overlook that. As you get used to the flavor of ACV you can increase the amount in the tea without compromising your enjoyment."
01/29/2012: Teresa from San Sebastian - Donostia, Spain replies: "Dear Kevel from Marysville, Washington,It's a crazy cooncidence but I was just re-reading Clean by Alejandro Junger MD last night and he's talking about you- I heartily reccommend the book and the detox program, in fact I'm doing it again right now!"
02/02/2012: Sandymo from St Louis, Mo replies: "I have heard of using ACV before but never tried it. Unfortunately I ran out of medicine and couldn't get a refill until I saw Dr. My Bp has been rising over last few weeks. On yesterday it was 160/100. I couldn't sleep I thought I might die. I prayed about natural remedies went online and saw this immediately went to get ACV.This morning it was 157/96. At 5 144/90 I have taken ACV twice today and now 137/78. This is lowest in 2 weeks. I am still going to Dr. But I thank GOD. I will continue my ACV."
02/14/2012: Mtlguy from Montreal, Quebec, Canada replies: "I'm kinda wondering about ACV it's soooo acidic that it burns the enamel off my teeth if I take shots of it every morning but yet makes my urine alkaline??? How is that?"
02/23/2012: Gail from Branson, Missouri replies: "To Kevel from Marysville, Washington :I would suggest cutting all dairy and gluten from your diet for awhile... No milk, cheese, yogurt etc and no wheat... do brown rice instead and other grains and I bet your health will clear up... You may also want to try cold pressed coconut oil as well there is a whole section on this site about it... Just eat plain foods like brown rice rice crispies with almond milk... Salads, veggies and fruits, qunioa or rice or brown rice pastas etc... Baked potato with steamed broccoli etc and your issues will clear up... There is a great movie called fat sick and nearly dead on netflix and it shows a couple of guys turn major health issues around eating this way... It sounds like you are having food sensitivity... Generally dairy and gluten are the culprits for most people but you should avoid white sugar and fake sweeteners also."
02/29/2012: Jimmy from Arlington, Va replies: "Or better yet, try paleo: http://whole9life.com/2012/01/whole-30-v2012/Brown rice and other grains can still have a negative affect. Same with white potatoes... Boo... Starching, high glycemic load. Try organic meats (grassfed if possible), all the veggies you can eat, nuts (except peanuts), limited fruit... NO dairy, NO legumes, NO grains (whole or otherwise)... I bet you'll feel AWESOME and lose a bunch of #s in the process."
[YEA] 02/29/2012: Greg from Moscow, Pa replies: "I have sinus polyps that clog my nasal passages especially in the colder months. After 6 months of clogged sinus I started taking ACV 3 times/day and after 1 week the congestion is nearly gone and I'm breathing through my nose."
03/01/2012: Charlotte from Essex, Clacton, England replies: "Thanks for this info. I am sick and tired of having sinusitus with all that goes with it. Feel worn out with no energy, headaches, pain in face etc. I am now going to try the ACV and see if it helps. Will also try tinctures of 2 x drops goldenseal, 3 eyebright, 2 mullein and 1 licorice three times a day."
03/06/2012: Tracey from Fort Worth, Tx replies: "Hey Jimmy from Arlinton, PA - Paleo diet all the way!! Add some ACV and I feel great! No more GERD and energy boosted. That wouldn't suprise most people, but I should mention I also have cancer. My Dr is always suprised at how well I feel."
05/20/2012: Roy from Lisbonne replies: "I started using the vinegar 5 days ago. Seems to that veins are only a bit smaller. Not conclusive yet. 30 minutes twice a day, and I ca walk a few more time without the compression socks. Ime will tell the difference. what seems to give fast relief is also a gel with horse chestnut and hamamelis."

Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar : The Medicinal Miracle by Earl Mindell
Loose Weight with Apple Cider Vinegar by Earl Mindell
Folk Medicine by DC Jarvis. Highly recommended book!
As reported by a reviewer on Amazon.com: "All that Dr. Jarvis wrote as to what the outcome would be if an individual would follow the stated regime of vinegar, honey, and kelp I can personally attest to. The excruciating joint and muscle pain, the fatigue and chronic upper respiratory infections that were described were written as if he knew me as a patient. Having suffered the paralysis that he described on page 29 in the soft covered edition I knew that he knew and understood in detail exactly what he was writing about. This is a 'must read' for everyone who wants to get well and stay well. For those who exercise and eat right and are well this book should be read for further understanding as to how the body is manufacturing acids, utilizing acids and eliminating acids to keep them that way. This book should be brought to the forefront and promoted as a 'must have' book for every household."

Replies01/21/2011: Fitness Funatic from Hohenwald, TN replies: "I have recently found Apple cider vinegar to be a great "dressing" on my lunch salad. I simply pour 2-3 T apple cider vinegar on the vegetable salad and toss to coat all ingredients before leaving for work in the morning. I seal my salad in an air tight container and pop in the frig when I get to work. Because I need a little sodium in my diet, I sprinkle ever so lightly with sea salt when I make it, and it's scrumptious at lunch! For those trying to follow a plant-based diet, it really adds a little pizzazz to those raw veggies. Enjoy!"

Replies02/18/2012: Dale from Poulsbo, Wa replies: "I don't understand why anyone would try taking ACV straight. I take about 2 tea spoons ACV mixed with about 4 Tbs of apple juice. Taste is not strong at all. This mix works great and is not hard to take. By the way, you only taste the first and last swollow of any liquid."
[YEA] 02/20/2012: Vikingirl from Knoxville, Tn replies: "This is the delicious way I add apple cider vinager to my daily routine. After a long walk with my dog, I pour half glass of cold water, half glass of cherry pomegranate juice, squirt of lemon and lime juice and 1 tsp yes 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar with lots of ice and it is so good, I don't taste or smell the acv. I also drink it with a straw. YUMMY!"

"Revised 10/01/2008:
As you know, Earth Clinic has recommended the standard 2 teaspoons in 8 oz of water 3x a day for years now. For more severe conditions, we recommended 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water 3x a day. We now think that less vinegar, more water is an optimal way of taking apple cider vinegar daily unless you are treating an acute condition like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, or sore throat (in which case the stronger concoction of 2 TBS ACV to 8 OZ of water 3x a day recipe is suggested).
For daily maintenance, weight loss and pH balancing, we now suggest the following:
2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar
16 ounces of water
Sip, don't chug!
We suggest 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 16 ounces of water that you'll sip throughout the day, rather than drinking the whole concoction at once 3 times a day. You will be keeping your pH in a constant, alkalized state by sipping this highly diluted dosage. Usually 1-2 tall glasses of the concoction are all you'll need each day.
If you drink a lot of water throughout the day, consider adding just a splash of apple cider vinegar to your glass/container each time you fill it up, rather than drinking the one, 16 oz glass of acv and water mentioned above.
For the record, we are not big fans of adding baking soda to apple cider vinegar, nor are we fans of adding any kind of sweetener to the acv/water solution. The baking soda works great for some people, but causes severe side effects in others.
Also, we know the Bragg brand is the most popular apple cider vinegar on the market, but we've had just as good results using Whole Foods' organic and Trader Joe's organic apple cider vinegar.
02/17/2009: Stacie from Apple Valley, CA replies: "I saw that Trader Joe's brand was recommended on this site, however their ACV is NOT raw, it's pasteurized, which kills the beneficial enzymes..."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR RECIPES
Standard Dosage: 2 teaspoons of ACV in 8 oz of water. Add honey to taste.
Acute Conditions: 2 tablespoons of ACV in 8 oz of water. No honey.
Note: 2 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar may be too much apple cider vinegar for some people . We suggest you start with the standard dosage and see how your body responds to a teaspoon or two of acv. If all goes well, you can up the dosage over time if you feel a need arise.
----------------------------------------------------------
ADDITIONAL EARTH CLINIC RECIPES
In summer months: Add 1/4 cup of ACV to a quart of water. Add ice cubes. Drink this on a hot summer day, especially before working out. Your body will feel very cleansed.
In winter months: 2 TBLS of ACV in a mug filled with hot water 3x day. Are you used to drinking tea or coffee during your long commute to work? Try this instead -- you will feel energized but not adrenalized. Add a few shakes of cayenne pepper if you REALLY want an energy lift!
To detox: 2 TBLSP of organic ACV in a 1 or 2 Liter filtered water bottle (ie Smart Water, Evian, etc). 2 TBLSP = 1/8th cup. You can add more vinegar than this amount, however, make sure you dilute it with plenty of water. Do not add a sweetener. Drink this solution throughout the day. The solution will be cleansing your system and kidneys all day long. That's the point.
There are several things you will notice within a day or two of drinking Apple Cider Vinegar: your allergies will disappear, your face will have a healthy & youthful glow, you will look & feel more VITAL, you will have consistent energy, and you will more easily digest your food.
We believe that apple cider vinegar is probably the best (and cheapest) detoxifier for the body. As such, it is should be considered a critical component to the fountain of youth!

Replies04/15/2009: Kristen from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA replies: "I have a question. Why do you NOT recommend putting any sweetener in the ACV? I was taking 2 tablespoons in a bottle of water for my allergies for the last 2 days, and could barely get it down. While my allergies went away (amazing!), I do not think I can make myself drink this every single day without something to help the taste. Today I started with 2 teaspoons of ACV in 16 ounces of water, as you recommend, but I added a tablespoon of organic Grade B maple syrup, which helps a lot. Is there anything you DO recommend that helps the flavor, without detracting from the benefits? Thanks so much for this extremely helpful website."EC: Just trying to avoid adding more sugar to one's diet! However, most readers on this site seem to add one kind of sweetener or another.
04/16/2009: Kramer from Richmond, VA replies: "I know this seems strange but I don't mind the taste of ACV. I've been taking a tablespoon of honey and a few minutes later a tablespoon of ACV. The honey coats my throat and it tastes fine. Is there a problem with taking it all at once rather than drinking it with water? It's so much quicker!"
EC: Many acv "old timers" report taking it straight!
04/16/2009: Georgie from Grove City, Ohio USA replies: "I always add my ACV to tomato juice instead of water. It tastes way better plus I get an easy way to get a serving of healthy vegetables too! And I don't add sweetener. Being a diabetic, that solves alot of problems."
04/26/2009: Montylyn from San Antonio, TX replies: "Thanks for the advise given on how to take ACV.V-8 is what I will be using. I hope this is okay. montylyn"
05/03/2009: John from Ames, Iowa replies: "Has anyone tried adding organic or fresh squeezed lemon juice to it. I know in alot of gallbladder flushs they add fresh squeezed lemon juice to change the taste of olive oil and to prevent nausea?"
05/20/2009: Eric from Algonquin, IL replies: "I have a question, can ACV be added to an evening fiber drink?"
05/28/2009: Bev from Brisbane, QLD Australia replies: "My Dad used ACV in his daily fibre drink for years."
06/06/2009: t from nyc, NY, USA replies: "You can also add stevia as a sweetner its natural w/o adding calories "
06/16/2009: Mama02girls from Moundsville, WV replies: "Great Apple Cider Vinegar recipe!!!
I had trouble swallowing the ACV in water so here is a recipe that I think tastes like lemonade and really makes it easy to drink.
- one cup water
- 2 Tbsp. ACV
- two packets lemon powder (It's all natural ground up powdered lemon sold near the spices- it comes in a box of 18 packets-ask your grocer- the regular grocery stores carry it, it comes in orange and lime, too!
- two packets Stevia Powder (health food store or regular grocery store)
This tastes like regular lemonade with a kick to me! I do suggest that you drink the regular apple cider vinegar in water first, that way you can appreciate how great and normal this tastes! Good luck!"
08/10/2009: Cgm from Claremont, Ca replies: "Re: Recipe from Mama02girls
Thank you so much for your recipe-it actally tastes good-my husband likes it too! I couldn't find lemon powder, so I just squeezed about 2T of frest lemon juice in it's place...thanks again."
09/25/2009: Kristie from Paso Robles, Ca replies: "I have been using ACV with a cup of grapefruit juice. I love it! The juice is sour anyway and I can hardly taste the vinegar."
09/30/2009: Noreen from Phoenix, Az replies: "If you use Agave syrup especially light Agave Syrup, a natural sweetener and it is a great low glycemic sweetener too. I usually order a case of it thru Amazon because it is cheaper that way. I use it in literally everything, you will love it!"
10/07/2009: Nance from Venice, Fl replies: "My husband and I just recently started taking ACV. We take it in a small glass of water with a drop of honey, which adds a bit of sweetness and some good healthy minerals as well."
10/14/2009: Ann from Elizabethtown, Ky replies: "I juice every morning with an apple, orange, strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi and add 2 TBSP of ACV and I have lost 20lbs since January. The good thing is that I lost my weight slowly and will likely maintain it. This is the best I've felt in years!"
10/20/2009: Sharik from Arcata, Ca replies: "I have, for years, had a disintegrating gall bladder and, because I am allergic to anesthesia, have chosen to live with it. When I have an attack, I use 1/4 Cup ACV in 8 oz. of organic apple juice and the attack goes away within minutes (usually 15). I keep small bottles of apple juice around for just such times. When I use it for a cleanser or for any other reason, I also use apple juice as a sweetener, usually the frozen kind. Just pour a little into your water bottle, along with the ACV and fill with distilled water. For some reason it makes it much more palatable. Hope this helps those who find it difficult to take with water alone."
11/09/2009: Phil from Tucson, Arizona replies: "I drank apple cider vinegar and it made me feel very light in the loafers!"
12/27/2009: Erparf from Denver, Colorado replies: "Whole Foods "Organic" '365' Apple Cider Vinegar is also, pasteurized."
02/10/2010: Sharqueen from Fort Nelson, Bc replies: "I LOVE mixing my ACV with orange juice and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper. I been drinking this since I was 6 year old, try it! YUMMY!"
03/03/2010: Andreia from Greenville, Sc replies: "Ann from Elizabethtown, KY... What else are you doing to loose that kind of weight since Jan? I juice, but however i have never used ACV in my juice. I am very interested in doing this and following your regimin. I am so tired all the time, I have been to dr's after dr's and they all tell me is i'm just lazy and nothing is wrong. I have had thyroid issues as my entire family has some kind of Thyroid issue. Anyway, can you just update me on your status, if your still loosing, what other methods are you trying to loose weight, i found this site because of the herb Rhodiola, this was in this months issue of womans world mag and i was interested in trying it.. i need energy bad.. I will try just about anything at this point to feel better.
Thanks!!! you can e-mail me at harleyrose26(AT)yahoo.com"
03/12/2010: Jessica from Milwaukie, Oregon replies: "This is a reply to Andreia from Greenville, Sc.03/03/10: Check how much Biotin you get on a daily basis.biotin is an enzyme cofactor that assists in the release of energy from carbohydrates and in the production of fatty acids. It also assists in activating the energy transfer molecule ATP. I always felt my body was not creating enough energy! Looking into deficiances I found my daily intake of biotin was way short. Even with my daily multivitamin I was still only getting 5% of my RDA. I now take 1000mcg of biotin once daily and have loads of energy!"
05/13/2010: Nessa from Shanghai, China replies: "About the being tired comment-I was very tired for years. The test to see if I was anemic came back negative but after years I did figure out it had something to do with a lack of protein from meat in my diet. Since I started eating meat protein I've felt more "normal", not so tired all the time."
05/25/2010: Harriet from Federal Way, Wa, Usa replies: "Another comment about being tired. I, too, was exhausted and my GP said my thyroid was 'normal'. Went to a specialist who did different tests (Free T3, Free T4, TSH and Thyroid antibodies) and discovered I had Hashimoto's. Within a week of treatment the exhaustion left. But I developed it again a couple of years later. My new GP said my iron levels were fine, but when I went to the thyroid doctor for my next blood work I asked him to check the ferritin levels (ferritin is your 'savings account' of iron). Anything below 10 is anemic and a woman needs around 50. Mine was 3. I was given an iron infusion. Turns out I had been on Prilosec for years for acid reflux from a hiatal hernia. Two months after the iron infusion (which made me feel like a new woman) I had surgery to correct the hernia. I can't remember exactly how it works but the Prilosec prevents your body from making something necessary for the processing of iron from your food, while preventing something else, yadda yadda, the upshot is I was horribly iron deficient because of the Prilosec. Since the infusion and surgery my ferritin is normal (4 years). When you visit a doctor because you are tired and he says you are lazy it is time to find a new doctor."
07/03/2010: Marty from Normandy Park, Wa. replies: "For the lady who is often very tired and wants to hear what others do for energy... I had Epstein Barr/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 2 years and the following helped me immensely:pharmaceutical liquid DHEA (after having my DHEA levels checked as the levels were low), vitimin B-12 injections through my doctor were amazing and gave me the energy of a young person again, and lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium bifidum/latis boosts by energy levels as well. I am just beginning ACV for acid reflex and have been amazed that something so simple is actually helping me and taking the horrible acid feeling in my chest away. God Bless You."
10/30/2010: Kristi from Arlington, Wa replies: "My son had a wart on his hand for over four months. We took him to the doctor three times for three different treatments. It never helped. I finally did some research and found many people suggested putting ACV on the wart, so I figured it was worth a try. I soaked a cotton ball in ACV, put it right on the wart, covered with a bandage and waited to see the results. Four days later, it fell off and the hand was healing. Not everyone will have the exact same result but I'm totally convinced that ACV is a great cure!!"
11/14/2010: Mike T from Flower Mound, Texas Usa replies: "My question is about tap water. If I mix the vinegar with tap water and then drink it throughout the day, does the chlorine in the water harm the beneficial organisms in the Mother? I actually don't mind the taste at all, but am concerned that I may not be achieving the full benefits of the vinegar."
11/19/2010: Jp from Portland, Or replies: "I STARTED accidentally with 2 TBS. In a 8oz glass and drank 4 1 glass in morning and 3 glasses between 6-10pm! ... For 4 days. Way too much! I am hypoglycemic and I feel terrible!! It was the beginning of a liver cleanse ruitine and I have decided to stop entirely. What can I do to get my blood sugar feeling normal again. The things I am doing are drinking lots of water, exercising and eating vegetables, but I still feel bad. Any suggestions? Thanks!"
11/24/2010: Shelley from Gold Coast, Queensland Australia replies: "Fluoride is highly damaging to the thyroid gland. Pure water is a must... The enzyme poison effect extends to our genes; DNA cannot repair itself, and chromosomes are damaged. Work at the University of Missouri showed genital damage, targeting ovaries and testes. Also affected is inter uterine growth and development of the foetus, especially the nervous system. Increased incidence of Down's Syndrome has been documented. Fluorides are mutagenic. That is, they can cause the uncontrolled proliferation of cells we call cancer. This applies to cancer anywhere in the body; but bones are particularly picked out. The incidence of osteosarcoma in a study reporting in 1991 showed an unbelievable 50% increase. A report in 1955 in the New England Journal of Medicine showed a 400% increase in cancer of the thyroid in San Francisco during the period their water was fluoridated. My particular concern is the effect of fluorides on the thyroid gland
Perhaps I may remind you about thyroid disease. The thyroid gland produces hormones which control our metabolism - the rate at which we burn our fuel. Deficiency is relatively common, much more than is generally accepted by many medical authorities: a figure of 1:4 or 1:3 by mid life is more likely. The illness is insidious in its onset and progression. People become tired, cold, overweight, depressed, constipated; they suffer arthritis, hair loss, infertility, atherosclerosis and chronic illness. Sadly, it is poorly diagnosed and poorly managed by very many doctors in this country. What concerns me so deeply is that in concentrations as low as 1ppm, fluorides damage the thyroid system on 4 levels.
1. The enzyme manufacture of thyroid hormones within the thyroid gland itself. The process by which iodine is attached to the amino acid tyrosine and converted to the two significant thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3), is slowed.
2. The stimulation of certain G proteins from the toxic effect of fluoride (whose function is to govern uptake of substances into each of the cells of the body), has the effect of switching off the uptake into the cell of the active thyroid hormone.
3. The thyroid control mechanism is compromised. The thyroid stimulating hormone output from the pituitary gland is inhibited by fluoride, thus reducing thyroid output of thyroid hormones.
4. Fluoride competes for the receptor sites on the thyroid gland which respond to the thyroid stimulating hormone; so that less of this hormone reaches the thyroid gland and so less thyroid hormone is manufactured. These damaging effects, all of which occur with small concentrations of fluoride, have obvious and easily identifiable effects on thyroid status. The running down of thyroid hormone means a slow slide into hypothyroidism. Already the incidence of hypothyroidism is increasing as a result of other environmental toxins and pollutions together with wide spread nutritional deficiencies. 141 million Europeans are at risk.
One further factor should give us deep anxiety. Professor Hume of Dundee, in his paper given earlier this year to the Novartis Foundation, pointed out that iodine deficiency is growing worldwide. There are 141 million Europeans are at risk; only 5 European countries are iodine sufficient. UK now falls into the marginal and focal category. Professor Hume recently produced figures to show that 40% of pregnant women in the Tayside region of Scotland were deficient by at least half of the iodine required for a normal pregnancy. A relatively high level of missing, decayed, filled teeth was noted in this non-fluoridated area, suggesting that the iodine deficiency was causing early hypothyroidism which interferes with the health of teeth. Dare one speculate on the result of now fluoridating the water? It also displaces Iodine in the body.. **********************************************************
Try having 2 teaspoons in a cup of water with half a teaspoon of honey, I have just read from alot of people it is really hard to keep down, after having it now for a few weeks, it almost tastes like weak cordial, and its all a mind over matter. I discovered Apple cider vinegar when my cat became sick with a Urinary Tract infection, upon giving him a teaspoon in his wet tuna mix, and a bit of water, he was happier in a matter of hours and is completely normal now. To everyone seeking a detox or a trying to lose weight, I can assure you this works. But make sure you use only pure water."
12/16/2010: Shane from Pearl City, Hawaii replies: "I have found that taking apple cider vinegar with Blackstrap molasses helps with the taste without adding empty sugar. In fact adding the blackstrap helps give your body more vitamins and minerals that you may be missing. I use 2 TBL vinegar with 1 TBL blackstrap and 8oz hot water. Delish.."
12/22/2010: Ginger from Moncks Corner, Sc replies: "I enjoy the following recipe as a hot beverage either in the morning or in the evening before bed, or both. I will say that it took a few days to get used to the taste, but now I really enjoy it and actually crave it every day.
- 8 oz. Hot distilled water
- 2 tbsp of ACV
- 1 tbsp of all natural honey
Stir and sip! My noticeable health benefits include the following:
- Digestion / Regular bowel movements
- Sleep through the night
- Complexion
- Reduced swelling
- Reduced headaches"
12/24/2010: Kristina from Vancouver, Wa replies: "If I only take the apple cider vinegar mixture once a day, will I be able to see any difference? I've been getting sick a lot this year (i think I am on my 4th sinus infection this year), and whenever I do get sick, I'm pretty knocked out for about two weeks. Also, if I stop taking it the Apple Cider Vinegar mixture, will that cause my ph to become more acidic?"
12/29/2010: David from Davenport, Iowa, United States replies: "I just tried this today and it was very good: Hyvee brand cinnamon apple tea (with 8oz boiled spring water) with ACV (2TBSP- a cute reflux condition); very delicious!!! :D"
01/03/2011: Dan from Myrtle Beach, Sc, Usa replies: "I've been routinely taking ACV, 2 tbs/day, since July, and I have only had a minor cold once. The fall is my worst season for allergies, and I work in retail and get sick repeatedly every year- all year. I've been doing amazing since starting the ACV. Barely a sniffle. A chiropractor/nutritionist recommended taking the ACV for 2 weeks, and then skipping for a week, and so on, and I think I feel better when I do this. He said it helps the body accept and use it better. Its helped me a lot so far, I think! "
01/03/2011: Dan from Myrtle Beach, Sc, Usa replies: "I told my chiropractor/nutritionist that I used ACV daily, and he said that it was important to cycle it, meaning: take it for 2 weeks, and then skip a week and keep repeating. He said that when you take it non-stop, your body gets used to it and it becomes less effective. I followed his advice, and I think I feel it working better now, but I'm not sure if it is in my head, ya know? Anyone else have an opinion on this?"
01/26/2011: Joyce from Chicago, Il replies: "I been having a very bad odor coming out of my mouth, I was wondering is it acid refulx. Also can you have body odor and not know about it, I notice when my co workers come around me they are always holding their nose or making wise crack such as what is that smell. I started using no fragrance soap. could you help me find a solution to this problem that I have."
02/03/2011: Juliana from Murrieta, Ca replies: "This is in response to the person who has bad breath. My husband also HAD bad breath, really bad! He tried everything! Then he was tested for allergies and found out he was highly allergic to yeast. He took yeast out of his diet, and now has good breath again. However, I always can tell if he had some.... The bad breath returns and other things start smelling very bad. I suggest you try taking it out of your diet for a week and see if you notice a difference. Good luck!"
02/04/2011: Amber from New Braunfels, Texas replies: "This is a response to Joyce regarding bad mouth odor. Check in mirror with small flashlight for tonsil stones, or tonsiloliths, forming on tonsils. These are unexplained stonelike formations, usually whiteish and can range from yellowish to orangeish in color. The odor is sulfur-like and permeates your breath. I use listerine or hydrogen peroxide on a cotton swab and gently rub them off my tonsils depositing them onto a paper towel or tissue. Though medical journals do not find a true cause of the stones, I find mine occur more frequently when I have more drainage from allergies. If this is not what is going on, I advise seeing a medical professional (an Ear Nose and Throat doctor or dental professional) to seek out a diagnosis. There are numerous sites on the web dedicated to tonsil stones, but I suggest not purchasing any "miracle cures" and taking care of them naturally through cleansing as stated above and a healthy diet and plenty of water."
02/21/2011: Nicolette from Santa Clara, Ca replies: "I tried ACV In hot green tea with honey and I still could not stand the taste. After reading articles online I tried vegetable juice with 2 tsp. Of ACV And I could not taste the ACV at all! So if your like me and cannot stand the taste of ACV then I suggest trying it in V8 juice! "
02/23/2011: Princessgigi from Tempe, Arizona replies: "I've begun to take 1talblespoon to a 16. 9 ounce bottle of water once per day. I recently moved to Arizona I have eczema (ugh) since childhood. It flaired up 2wice on my back, arms and chest so when it came around again a few weeks ago I started googling remedies.
For some reason Apple Cider Vinegar with water once a day and 1cup of Apple Cider Vinegar (or) distilled, 2tablespoons of salt in footspa bath 3times a week DONE KICKED that eczema's BUTT BYE BYE! Yipeee! Now I don't know all what it does but by golly it's WORKING. I had started having UGLY peeling of on My hands and once I implimented these regime within My Life (EVERYTHING) has changed for the better.
the footspa soak tackled the eczema but from what I read it remedies athletes foot too."
03/03/2011: Dan The Man from Chico, Ca replies: "I like the taste of Apple Cider Vinegar and water. But those that don't should try to add (Stevia extract) I just did it for the first time today and it tastes like lemonade!"
03/11/2011: Sorrell from Brookline, Massachusetts, Usa replies: "Hi,
I have terrible acid stomache, churning burning, it keeps me awake at night. Also lots of burping , farting, ocassional spitting up, awful gastric distress. My stools stink, lately they are a chaulky light brown/whitish color. It feels likemy food, is just sitting there in my lower abdomen and not digesting. I may have gerd, ulcers, not sure. I do have ibs, fibromialgia and really bad candida, which is supposedly getting better according to my health care person. I do terrible with anything fermented, especially vinegar, due to the candida, so I am very reluctant to take apple cider vinegar. Any ideas, Thanks, Sorrell"
03/14/2011: Jenny from North Little Rock, Ar replies: "For those of you with fatigue issues, take it from a long time sufferer and see a sleep specialist! I have struggled for years with fatigue and the feelings of worthlessness because I was told there was nothing wrong with me. If you think something is wrong trust your gut and don't stop at one doctor if your not satisfied! The 1st doc I saw said my constant tiredness was a result of my lifestyle. Well, I have led several different lyfestyles over the last 20 years: high school student, college student, young married woman, new mom and experienced mom. His diagnosis did not ring true, time for a new doc. Guess what my new doc found out after a sleep study, I have narcolepsy! My point is the Doctor/Patient system we have is broken and if you feel something is really wrong be a bulldog! Sometimes doctors are wrong. Find a good one who will listen and insist on getting the time you need to understand everything they think is going on in your body. Stand up for yourself or loved one, it can mean the difference between correct or incorrect diagnosis! Oh, and thanks for all the UTI help!"
03/18/2011: Brenda from Portland, Oregon replies: "Light, chalky colored stools often indicate a bile-deficiency. This can be caused by a block in the gallbladder/bile duct or it could just be a deficiency of bile in the body. The symptoms can be burping, indigestion, smelly stools, stomach pains, pain between the shoulder blades, etc. If there's a block and it's a calcium based stone it will show up in an ultrasound/cat scan, however if it's a cholesterol stone it most likely will not. Cholesterol stones are slowly dissolved with ACV or lemon juice daily.
Another product used in Europe is Rowachol and can be ordered online. Calcium stones generally require increased phosphorus consumption. There's a great website that will give more information than I can post here www.gallbladderattack.com There's a beet recipe that will thin the bile and get it flowing... If you gently move the bile it will slowly wash any stones and over time will begin to desintegrate them. Beets because of their sugar content can aggravate yeast, I would use tumeric and pau d'arco tea to knock down the yeast and remove any processed sugar and refined carbs from the diet.
Once the bile is flowing and there are no stones blocking the ducts you can add bile salts to the diet which will further help to relieve digestive problems. Have your health care practitioner check for stones and work with them to get the bile thinned and flowing. Do some research online to further educate yourself so you make the most of your appointment with your health care practitioner. I would recommend working with your doctor as you don't want to force the bile flow if there are any stones blocking the pathway or you could end up in the emergency room. The key is to work gently, honoring the body. Also, there are homeopathic remedies, and other nutritional supplements that can further support your digestion that an alternative health care practitioner can provide you with. When someone is bile deficient, it will often times aggravate or trigger candida as food isn't being digested, and it's fermenting in the system. Hope you feel better shortly! "
04/28/2011: Redped from Houston, TX replies: "Sorrel, I believe your name is with the digestive problems. Please! Have your pancreas checked-DO not waste time. Your symptoms are so vague, most doctors don't think pancreas-they go stomach, gall bladder, liver, intestines-TELL them you demand a thorough pancreas test-CA-19-9, CT/MRI-DO NOT take no for an answer-bull dog this and go now!"
05/19/2011: Izzo from Ny replies: "Response to Sorrell from Brookline, Massachusetts:
Get you some "Greendrinks" Kyogreen Powdered drink from GNC or Vitamin shop. Start of with 1 teaspoon 3Xs a day of green drinks in 8 ounces of water. Add psyllium husk flavored version, comes in white container with picture of intestines on it. Orange flavor works for me. Dont burp, green stuff has lil after taste. Lol. Guzzle down. Knocks the bowel smell out, cleanses, and makes soft-regular stools. Use this mixture with your vinegar and water treatment. Mix and match as you please."
11/29/2011: Maggie from Atl, Ga, United States replies: "How many times should you drink apple cider vinegar in a day? I started my regimen to help me lose weight and to control my menstrual cramps (my period will be here in a few days and I don't like having to keep taking Midol for the 1st 3 days of it). I already drank an 8 oz. Glass of water with 2 tsp of ACV. Also, can you add ACV to other drinks or sweeten the water?"
12/07/2011: Lee from Wigan, Merseyside replies: "You can now get Apple Cider Vinegar with Manuka Honey, no need to add it afer. I get mine from here, www.greenbayharvest.co.ukI'm not plugging them it's just I have bought the manuka honey and the combined ACV from them and its really good stuff."
12/08/2011: Grandsophy from Columbus, Ohio, United States replies: "HI - I read on webmd, the risks of taking ACV daily (2tbsp 2x a day with 4oz water) is high for those with bone issues as it can cause low potassium levels. Has anyone else seen this as a problem? (link - http://www.webmd.com/diet/apple-cider-vinegar?page=3)Besides acidic impact to teeth, are there are any other risks to be aware of? My mom has osteoporosis and high BP and pre-diabetic so the ACV is greatly helping control her sugar levels.
Thanks very much for the help."
12/09/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Grandsophy - Dr. Mercola has an article from 2009 (still very relevant) about apple cider vinegar. Here's the link:http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/06/02/Apple-Cider-Vinegar-Hype.aspx
There's a section entitled, "How Should Apple Cider Vinegar Be Used" and it mentions several things (like potassium levels, teeth erosion, possible drug interaction, etc. ). Personally, I would just add potassium-rich foods to my diet since taking apple cider vinegar has so many benefits.
If you have the time, there are over 300 comments from his readers (click on "View Comments"). I always find that as informative as the article because it comes from regular folks who actually use it.
I'm so happy your Mom has been able to control her sugar levels with ACV. Best wishes, Bess"
01/26/2012: Len D from Toronto, Ontario, Canada replies: "Just had to write: I was doing some research on what was causing crusty white patches on my hands. I find out it was solar keratosis (too much time spent in the sun).http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Solar-Keratosis.htm
Anyways, I found this ACV site and discussions regarding "healthy skin" and decided to give it a try. Got some Bragg's and started with 1 tsp in 1 cup of water and started sipping during the day. I noticed three days later, the keratosis spots had diminished by 80%. They are now just light brown spots that resemble skin (and not crusts). I'm a believer.
The only caution I have is after every sip I rinse with clear water. The ACV (being acidic) and teeth don't play nice together."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR HISTORY (part 2)
"We thank Jonothan Shiloka for emailing us the following:
Vinegar: A Natural Approach to Avian Management
By Wanda Barras
"Many herbalists recommend the use of raw, unpasteurized, unheated, organic apple cider vinegar as an important dietary ingredient for humans, farm animals and pets, including birds. The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care describes apple cider vinegar in this way: "Long a folk remedy, cider vinegar has been shown to improve the health of dairy cows, horses, dogs and other animals. It reduces common infections, aids whelping, improves stamina, prevents muscle fatigue after exercise, increases resistance to disease and protects against food poisoning. Cider vinegar is rich in the vitamins, minerals and trace elements found in apples, especially potassium; it normalizes acid levels [pH] in the stomach, improves digestion and the assimilation of nutrients, reduces intestinal and fecal odors, helps cure constipation, alleviates some of the symptoms of arthritis and helps prevent bladder stones and urinary tract infections."
Vinegar Through The Ages
Vinegar has been used to cure ailments for centuries. For hundreds of years, folk medicine practitioners have recommended daily doses of apple cider vinegar, not only for specific medical problems, but also for overall food health. In Asia vinegar is called the friend of Chinese herbs because it is often used to process herbal preparations. It is also successfully used in modern Chinese medicine.
Historically, the origin of vinegar was never specifically noted. Vinegar was probably discovered when one of our ancestors found that wine exposed to the air would turn sour, thereby creating vinegar. It is amongst the oldest of foods and medicines know to man. For its healing ways, vinegar has been used for thousands of years. In 400 B.C, Hypocrites, known as the father of medicine, treated patients with vinegar, making it one of the world's first medicines. Throughout biblical times, vinegar was successfully used to treat infections and wounds. For centuries medical textbooks have listed various ways to use vinegar. These uses include everything from keeping a sharp mind to purifying the waters of the body and to easing pain and alleviating dozens of other ailments. Modern laboratory analysis verifies the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of vinegar. Many of the old-time uses are just as applicable now as they were centuries ago. (Moore xii)
Natural Apple Cider Vinegar: One of Mother Nature's Most Perfect Foods
Fermenting sweet juice makes vinegar. The juice turns to wine or cider which is allowed to ferment a second time until the alcohol mixes with oxygen in the air, changing it into acetic acid and water. Natural---that is, undistilled, organic, raw, apple cider vinegar is often called one of Mother Nature's most perfect foods. Apple cider vinegar should be made from fresh, organic, crushed apples that are allowed to mature naturally in wooden barrels. Natural apple cider vinegar, found in health food stores, should be a rich amber color with the "mother" quite visible as sentiment on the bottom. The strength of vinegar is important. All varieties of vinegar contain about 4 to 7 percent acetic acid, with 5 percent being the most common amount. Acetic acid is what gives vinegar its tart and sour taste.
There is nothing beneficial about commercial distilled vinegars except for pickling, cleaning and disinfection ---they have no health value! They do not contain the health values of organic, raw apple cider vinegar with the mother still intact and viable. Distilled white vinegar and cider vinegar sold in supermarkets are considered "dead" vinegars with none of the enzymes and other live factors that make raw, unpasteurized vinegars so valuable. Distilling removes the beneficial "mother" from the vinegar, thereby, destroying the powerful enzymes and life giving minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, natural organic sodium, magnesium, sulphur, iron copper, natural organic fluorine, silicon, trace minerals, pectin and other powerful nutrients. Also destroyed are natural malic and tartaric acids, which are important in fighting body toxins and inhibiting unfriendly bacteria growth (Bragg 1- 4).
Apple cider vinegar has shown to be an extremely valuable constituent in the body's biochemical operations and an essential building block in the construction of many complex substances in the body. Vinegar is low in calories and carbohydrates but does contain small amounts of calcium, phosphorus, iron and, of course, lots of potassium. A cup of ACV is 98.8% water, has 34 calories, a trace of protein, and no fat. (Moore p.viii) Acetic acid, the principal constituent in vinegar, plays an important role in the release of energy from fats and carbohydrates. It is of primary importance in the body's metabolism.
Apple Cider Vinegar Can Make Any Living Thing Healthier
Dr. D.C. Jarvis, MD who wrote "Folk Medicine, A Vermont Doctor's Guide to Good Health" and "Arthritis and Folk Medicine", is completely convinced that apple cider vinegar could make any living thing healthier. He believes, Potassium, which is found in just the right amounts in natural apple cider vinegar "is so essential to the life of every living thing and that with out it there would be no life. Potassium is the most important of all minerals that are necessary for good health." Potassium's main function is to promote cell, tissue and organism growth. It is necessary to replace dead cells and tissue. There is no better source of potassium than vinegar---particularly natural apple cider vinegar.
Dr. Jarvis believes Apple cider vinegar can help fight infection, simply by keeping fluids where they belong---in body cells, not in bacteria. Bacteria need moisture to thrive. As bacteria multiply, they will pull necessary fluids from healthy cells in order to flourish, particularly during times of stress when resistance is low. Stress is a major agent in causing a previously sub-clinical problem to break into a full-blown illness. If the process goes unchecked illness will occur. In order to defeat bacterial infections and illness it is important to keep moisture in the cells and prevent germs from depleting that moisture. According to Dr. Jarvis: "If there is enough potassium in each body cell, it will draw moisture from the [harmful] bacteria, instead of the bacteria taking moisture from the body cells." Therefore by providing natural sources of potassium in the diet (fruit, berries, sprouts, edible leaves, edible roots, etc.) and including apple cider vinegar to that diet the body cells are provided with the necessary moisture-attracting potassium. It is interesting to note that many traditional medicines used to combat bacterial illness also work by depriving bacteria of moisture and thus keeping fluids inside the cells (O'Brien p40)
Acidic pH Balance Will Discourage Bacteria, Yeast & Fungal Growth
Apple cider vinegar destroys microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and others, and prevents poisons from reaching the rest of the systems of the body. It has been proven to inhibit the growth of gram-negative bacilli, Pseudomonas, and Candida. The acid nature of vinegar makes the digestive tract environment unpleasant for germs and fungus. Apple cider vinegar has proven to be a natural treatment (and preventative) in simple cases of avian pediatric digestive disorders. Dr. Jarvis through his own research believes that apple cider vinegar will lower bloods natural alkalinity, bringing it closer to a natural healthy acid state. A naturally acidic digestive tract digestive, with the correct pH balance, will discourage bacteria and is less likely to grow yeast and fungus. Apple cider vinegar can assist the natural process of breaking food in the stomach. The acidic qualities of ACV will help break down protein, in the digestive system, for absorption into the bloodstream.
Apple Cider Vinegar On The Farm
For the past year and a half I have routinely added apple cider vinegar, to my baby birds' hand-feeding formula, to all drinking water and sprinkled some on the food of the animals here at our aviary and small dairy farm. These animals include several species of breeding exotic parrots, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats and LaMancha dairy goats. The vinegar keeps the water bowls and bottles very clean and sanitary and the animals seem to love it--- of course, the nutritional and health benefits are a plus. Apple cider vinegar added to young birds drinking water encourages early weaning and healthy weight gain and they will feather out faster. Adding a little raw apple cider vinegar to the hand-feeding formula water can prove nutritionally beneficial and help to inhibit the growth of yeast, fungus and bacteria. In formula a ratio of about 1/4 tsp per 4 oz water is best.
You may safely add cider vinegar to food and/or drinking water, starting with small amounts and building up to 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per 15 pounds of body weight or about 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (health food store variety best) to 8 oz water. That is about %1/4 cup per gallon of water and/or you may sprinkle or spray small amounts on bird's food. Gradually add small doses to food over time, you can help even the most finicky eater to accept this. Do not use metal food or water dishes when using vinegar, stainless steel is OK.
In Conclusion
Why Vinegar? Because it can be used medicinally, gets rid of poisons in the body, has disinfecting and cleaning properties and is a natural, nontoxic, biodegradable substance. That is, vinegar is an unadulterated food, a powerful cleansing agent and healing elixir---a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria. We would be smart to make use of vinegar in our own lives and in our avian nurseries and breeding facilities. --- For a healthier, stronger, longer life for our animals and ourselves.

BITTER TASTE AND SOMETIMES EXCEEDINGLY ACIDIC
Ratings:

"Some apple cider vinegar brands are extremely acidic, causing heartburn and yeast infections. (Note: certain brands of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar stop a yeast infection, yet other brands are so acidic that they can actually cause a yeast infection. Thus start with a lower dose to see how your body responds to the vinegar.) 5% acidity level is what is posted on all ACV labels, however it seems that some brands are far more acidic than others! We once bought an expensive, organic, unpasteurized brand with a fancy gold label and got terrible heartburn that lasted for hours from just 2 teaspoons' worth!"
Replies[YEA] Flor from Aurora, USA/Philippines replies: "Yes! Apple cider vinegar is also important for opening a stagnant plant bud like in roses. I tried it and it worked perfect. I tried mixing 2 teaspoons in a 5 glasses of water and watered it to my potted plants specially when the soil is fresh just brought from the market. You can do it once every 6 months."

04/13/2009: Amy from League City, Texas"Did you mean to say to Brush your teeth afterward? Or is brushing too harsh for teeth? Also, am I right in assuming from this that the enamel returns to its original strength after an hour? Thanks."
09/28/2009: E from Nw, Fl replies: "regarding the brushing your teeth...yes she is saying NOT to brush immediately, My dental hygienists have always said don't brush if you vomit (I think this might have been when I was pregnant) just to rinse with water to remove the excess acid from your mouth but if you brush immediately it can damage the enamel on your teeth since the acid has broken it down temporarily. So the poster is saying wait before brushing. Your saliva will help counteract/re balance the correct ph balance in your mouth...you could always brush your tongue and gums gently and then rinse gently but just don't scrub the teeth. Hope this helps! :)"

I also always keep papaya enzymes to chew on after a heavy meal or anytime between meals! It's like a MIRACLE!!! :o)"
01/31/2011: Andrea from Springfield, Missouri Usa replies: "Why not try rinsing your mouth with water or bottled water to get the vinegar off of your teeth so it doesn't ruin the enamel rather than waiting an hour for your ph to return the salivia to normal, because it is probobly just eating the enamel off of your teeth during that hour after taking the ACV."

TED'S REMEDIES
07/04/2006: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand: "There is an ACV remedy and then there is Ted's ACV remedy. The ACV remedy is what has been traditionally done to drink it directly. Now I have always recommended the use of the second one, which requires that you add baking soda to the ACV to neutralize the acid to just 7.0 or close to it before drinking, otherwise the acidity will bring on dentin sensitivity and cause erosion of the enamel. A minimum pH on ACV of 6.0 and above should stop enamel erosion, in case you like somewhat of a "sour" ACV tastes, ideally it should be closer to 7.0
You might wonder whether therapeutic effectiveness of the second one might be as effective as the original one. It should be at least as effective if not more effective than an original formula for two reasons:
1. If you take the original ACV remedy (2 TBS in a glass of water), the body is going to neutralize it anyway using the available bicarbonates the body stores have. If not, you get a burning tongue or skin of the tongue become lose or tears up, if the body don't have sufficient bicarbonates. It takes AT LEAST A week to get a bicarbonate level to optimum provided you take bicarbonates everyday. I am of course assuming that in this instance, you don't have sufficient bicarbonate levels.
2. The newer ACV remedy I have always recommended (AKA Ted's ACV recipe) is to ADD baking soda until most of the acid is neutralized near 7.0. Chemically it is not changed, the malic becomes a malate when baking soda has neutralized, but then the body is going to convert to THAT anyway. What YOUR body wants is that the pH is at an ideal theoretical pH 7.35, which is equivalent to the pH of your blood.
So for me an ideal food, whether we talk about ACV or any other food should GENERALLY be slightly alkaline. If you don't do it for your body the body will change to an alkaline anyway, provided that your body is FIT to do that! So it is best not to assume that your body is FIT and it is best to assume the worst and just add the baking soda as a precaution.
Making it alkaline will give you the extra benefit of more oxygen in your body and greater buffers the body need so you should in fact feel better with the newer formula. In fact, athletes takes pure baking soda to relieve them of muscular pain from long physical endurance. Thinking along this makes it easier to use this newer formula as well as protect against enamel erosion.
Many people have misinterpreted the event where a body becomes alkaline in event of a person becomes sick to be a "bad thing". However, this is HOW a body kills off invading bacteria and viruses by raising up the alkalinity level. So in fact alkalinity is actually needed. When an immune system is suppressed or destroyed (from surgery or chemical toxins), the body will raise its alkalinity level much more frequently than a healthy person. What a potentially sick person needs to do is to give sufficient buffers for alkalinity using baking soda, but also regenerate the body's immune system (the thymus) with supplementation of secretogues, such as L-glutamine, melatonin, and iodine from seaweed and kelp."
EC: Please read all the feedback we have received on this combination remedy, including side effects."
Replies11/28/2010: David from Cody, WY replies: "Question regarding Ted's ACV Remedy:I've been on Protonix for about 5-6 years. I understand that PPI drugs have awful side effects. I experience them first hand. My question is, does this ACV remedy merely replace the daily Protonix regimen? In other words, do I now have to take ACV for the rest of my life or can I quit the ACV after a period of time? Much thanks."

USDA BREAKDOWN OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
"The below table is from the USDA's nutrient database. We typed in the words "Vinegar, cider" on the home page to get this chart.
Note: The USDA does not specify on the chart whether they tested a commercial, pasteurized brand (i.e., Heinz) or an organic brand (i.e., Bragg). We have the feeling they probably tested a commercial brand. An organic brand of apple cider vinegar may have slightly higher values.

VITAMIN AND MINERAL CONTENT OF ACV
"Scientists have reportedly measured ninety different substances in apple cider vinegar such as thirteen types of carbolic acids, four aldehydes, twenty ketones, eighteen types of alcohols, eight ethyl acetates etc. It also contains important minerals, trace elements and vitamins as well acetic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, enzymes, amino acids as well as roughage in the form of potash and apple pectin.
Apple Cider Vinegar contains minerals and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron, silicon, fluorine. An alternative to drinking apple cider vinegar may be to take potassium supplements, as potassium is known to absorb excess fluids (ie, mucous) in the body. Drink lots of water if you take potassium supplements so you don't get dehydrated! Potassium, by the way, lowers high blood pressure.
Apple Cider Vinegar's vitamin content includes Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Provitamin beta-carotene, Vitamin P (bioflavonoids)."

WARNINGS AND CAVEATS
"*** THYROID MEDICATION AND APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WARNING!
05/10/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands writes: "... Deirdre, ACV is wonderful, but may be you should post a warning for people with thyroid (and may be other conditions) to give a gap of at least 4 hours between taking thyroid medication and ACV, because otherwise ACV seems to interfere with the absorption of thyroid medicine and the results are not what we would like to see. This might also be true for iron supplements.

03/21/2011: Joan from Talent, Oregon replies: "Question: I had very good luck in lowering my blood sugar using ACV. That was great, but my low thyroid (hypothyroidism) got even lower which could be related to the ACV. I'm curious about how to keep the blood sugar within normal range and at the same time being able to raise my thyroid levels to be in normal range."
05/22/2011: Elise from Phoenix, Az replies: "To keep thyroid health eat dulse seaweed. Just soak 1/4 cup dulse dry seaweed in a little water for a minute or two, then chop and put into salads, etc. It works for me. I am 58 and have no thyroid problems. Elise"
01/12/2012: Myrna from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia replies: "Good Morning, I would suggest to those with thyroid problem to take Lugol's solution (iodine) five to eight drops a day in water or juice. I would recommend you read the book Take control of your health and Escape the Sickness Industry, by Elaine Hollingsworth or visit her website WWW.DoctorsareDangerous.com I believe you will learn lots about many health problems and how to address them with alternative medicine, especially for Thyroide. You can get the Lugol's solution online as it is very difficult to get it in chemists at least in Australia."

01/04/2011: Noahthree from Panama City, Fl: "Folks, I won't speak to what I do not know, but this I do know: NO real apple cider vinegar is alkaline, even if mixed with honey. Honey and water and even baking soda may well either dilute/weaken its acidity (honey and water), or even neutralize it (baking soda). However, chemically, VINEGAR IS AN ACID. That doesn't mean it's bad, nor does it mean it won't cause your body to decrease (or increase) its own acid production. But vinegar is definitely an acid.
As for me, I've had GERD since I was about 7 years old (I'm 52 now), although my diagnosis only happened about 11 years ago. I'm a singer and speaker, and seem to have some permanent vocal damage due to my GERD. I also have asthma, which again may be at least partially due to GERD. I've been taking prevacid for these 1 years, and I'm much better than I used to be. However, I'm curious as to whether I might be well served by ACV, especially after reading the posts here. I'm going to get some today and try it for myself. I'll report my results as time goes by. Acid to treat acid: it doesn't make complete sense to me, but I don't claim to know how or why many things work. I hope this does! "
Replies01/04/2011: Mike from Montreal, Quebec, Canada replies: "Let me clarify the following for you: "ACID TO TREAT AN ACID CONDITION". To begin with, imagine a valve that separates your stomach acid from your esophagus. Now suppose I were to tell you that mother nature designed your body in a such a way THAT THE OPENING AND CLOSING OF THIS VALVE IS CONTROLLED BY THE PH LEVEL OF YOUR STOMACH. That is, when you are hungry and about to eat, your stomach secretes a lot of HCL acid in order to digest your food. This valve actually stays shut if the PH level of your stomach is very acidic thus preventing acid from damaging the upper portion of your body. If you do not secrete enough stomach acid (some people are born with this condition) then the acidity level in your stomach is not sufficient to keep this valve properly shut. The results is GERD.SOLUTION: Take the stomach acid test to determine if you secrete enough HCL acid. If it is always to low then that is the cause of your GERD and you should consider taking HCL Betaine supplements. Believe me I use to have GERD although not as severe as you and when I consumed HCL betaine capsules, I immediately felt that suddenly there is no large amount of mucous being constantly secreted inside my throat. Also I notice that my tongue always stays red instead of always being coated with this white mucous stuff. That is how I know that ACID can treat an ACID condition. Hope that helps you! Mike"
[YEA] 02/20/2011: Trh from Goshen, In replies: "When someone suffers from an acid reflux type condition it seems that it is nearly always assumed that they have too much acid in their stomach, but this is not always the case. I suffered from digestive problmes for 2 1/2 years (I am only 22), and yes, that acidic feeling in my stomach, and acid coming up my esophagus. I saw two different doctors and both gave me acid inhibiting medication- exact opposite of what I needed! I researched on my own and found that the symptoms of too much acid are very similar to those of not enough stomach acid production (Hypochloridia).I immediately stopped taking acid reducers, and modified my diet, I started eating small meals, trying to chew food very well (to ease digestion), and reduced foods that were hard to digest (especially nuts), and those which promote bad bacteria growth- I. E. Sugar. These along with a few other changes majorly improved my digestive health, normalized my appetite and helped me to feel better in general. You should get some kind of a test to find out conclusively what is the problem, and if it is low acid production the things I mentioned along with digestive enzymes, etc. Should help out a lot. -More acid may be exactly what you need! "
08/07/2011: Erica from Slc, Ut, Usa replies: "Noahthree,I am also a singer. I use my talents often, especially at school, churches and benefit concerts. I was also diagnosed with GERD. Mine was diagnosed as to from too much eating, caffeine cunsuption, etc. They also discovered that the lower esophageal sphincter to my stomach is erroded, so it won't close. That is what is causing my GERD. In the exam, the DRs giving me the exam, said that they had NEVER seen GERD react as fast as mine - the moment it hit my stomach, up went the acid. I did Prilosec, Zantac, etc. I was still having GERD while on those meds. I then did research on ACV. It's harsh but I don't have any issues with GERD when I take it. So much cheaper and it's better for you.
Also, I ruptured my vocal chords when I wasn't diagnosed with pneumonia for 12 weeks and from all the coughing caused the rupture. I thought that I would have problems with ACV and my voice but that hasn't happened. I just feel better taking ACV. This stuff is amazing. I know that this sounds ridiculous and made up but it isn't. I really hope that this helps with your questions and concerns..."
10/06/2011: Van from Sunnyvale, Ca, Usa replies: "I just did a test with ACV. One tall glass with 2T of ACV. When I drank the first have my PH read 6.75. Then I down the last half and put the PH strip under my tounge where my saliva comes out so I am testing the saliva and not the liquid that remained on my tongue. The result was 7.25.When I first was experimenting with an Alkaline diet with PH drops, I had acid reflux. My PH pointed to alkaline, but I couldn't hold my food down. I was in England at the time and I thought it was the over priced British cuisine (ie hot dog stand) turns out you guys are right, it is due to too much alkalinity not acidity.
A lot of professionals say a lot of weird things or just don't know. Sometimes I have to google the answers for my doctor so they would stop arguing with me. Proof is in the PH strip not always in our common logic."
10/10/2011: Van from Sunnyvale, Ca, Usa replies: "Seems like I must have ate something bad because I can't get my saliva PH to go up. Neither ACV or baking soda could get it to go up."
01/12/2012: Myrna from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia replies: "Mike from Montreal, Try half a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar (the one sold at health food stores) in a glass of water half hour before you eat. I read this in the book Take Control of your health and Escape the Sickness Industry by Elaine Hollingsworth, her website is www.Doctorsaredangerous.com My husband had the same problem and the first time he took it the cure was immediate."

[YEA] 08/15/2010: Mike from Casper, Wy : "I had very bad Gerd conditions. Occasionally I could not even digest my food for days. I would have night sweats and general flu like feelings. I was prescribed pills from the doctor, and also tried the over the counter pills, all with varying results of success depending upon the severity of my condition. I had all the fun tests done on my digestive system with no real issues found, except Barrett's esophageal which the acid burning my throat caused. I determined to resolve the problem, and read many articles about diet. For me it was coffee, smoking, and stress which caused my worst break outs (in hindsight). Alcohol could also trigger an outbreak. Not overloading my body with coffee all day and drinking in the evening accompanied with smoking throughout, alone made a big difference. But while I was making these changes in diet I found information on how pills might not be that great for someone either, and I found Ted's recipe. Perhaps I should say I found the ACV treatment first, which didn't do anything for me, but then I added the Baking Soda, and what a difference! I threw the pills away and have never been back since! I began taking it 2-3 times a day, and after a week I was doing it only occasionally. Now I take it only as needed, maybe once or twice a month, though it wouldn't hurt if I did it more regularly. My most serious gerd symptoms are gone and now I only get occasional heartburn when that diet I spoke about earlier gets a little heavy on the bad stuff. But just one or two treatments in a day have me back on track. Make no mistake, for the worst conditions, you must modify your diet. I cut the coffee, stopped smoking (for awhile), and limit my alcohol consumption (though it's worse or as bad as coffee to me). After making difficult changes I was able to return to normal enjoyments in moderation. All things in moderation is something which must be observed for the best recovery. My mix is slightly different than Ted's by accident. I was confused about the water so I only used enough to slightly dilute the mixture, about 2-3 ounces of water (an easy amount to take in one or two gulps). A minute later I let out a big burp and I feel instant relief everywhere. If I do not feel better or burp I give it about 30 minutes and I do it again. I've never had to do it a third time, and once the symptoms are gone I don't do it again until they return. Usually I will be back in moderation mode and it isn't necessary until my next slip up. Also, I only use 1/4 to 1/3 teaspoon of baking soda to two teaspoons of ACV, so a lot of baking soda is not necessary, as has been mentioned. This is not a temporary daily fix like antacids, the effects seem to last days. Recently I was with friends for a weekend. It was early evening when we started drinking and my reflux began hammering me more than I had seen in a long time. I took this remedy and resumed to the festivities (hoping it would undo the damage that had already started and allow me to continue what I had started) and with only 1 dose I was fine all that weekend through the all "fun". I am posting this because my friends made alot of fun for me for this recipe. I explained that I did not know how it works, but I have tried alot of things and it just works. And works it does! Apparently, it can even stop reflux dead in its tracks when moderation isn't optional! My friends aren't convinced (likely far from it), but if you suffer, try this, it works, and it cost maybe 5 bucks for a 6 month supply. It has been about 2 years since I first read and begun this cure, thank you Ted! I try to pass it along to those who will listen."

[YEA] 02/05/2010: Ted from Bennnington, Vermont: "I also have suffered from acid reflux for about a year. Took acid-dissolving tablets which only temporarily alleviated the symptoms. Discovered ACV on this site and after taking two doses (2 tsp. of ACV in 8 oz. of water) in one day, I felt better for the next five days than I had for months. Problem totally gone.
While looking for information about ACV, I discovered at least one site that purported to pop the ACV balloon by declaring ACV has no medicinal or health-giving properties, etc. Amusing to see that the site's sponsors were all pharmaceutical and health care-insurance companies. Gee, how about that! As if those folks would tell the truth if their lives depended on it."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 01/08/2009: John from Germantown, MD,USA: "Hello everyone, first i would like to say what a wonderfull website this is and i have learned a lot by reading here every night THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I am 28 years old and i have Acid reflux, i started taking ACV (Braggs) 1 to 2 tsp with 8 ounces of water and i saw tremendous improvement in my reflux, everything in my body started to come back to Normal, Unfortunately it also mad me constipated and it is giving me gas/Bloating and discomfort..pressure type of symptom right where Liver suppose to be, i have tried to do research of why this is happening with no success.
I am Guessing maybe because i have TOO much acid and taking ACV Makes my food go quicker without proper digestion which also causes gas and bloating? i don't know..please someone help me, no way i am giving up on ACV it's too good, but how do i get rid of this pressure on my side of a stomach and constipation? any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance and God bless.
please emaill me if possible at Vakhtangi_m@yahoo.com.
Thank you again."
01/23/2009: Sarah from Phoenix, USA replies: "You are probably experiencing that side effect because apples have fiber in them. Cider in general will give me that feeling. I use Beano. It works well and it's natural. I hope this helps you! Good luck!"
05/23/2009: Ivette from Pasadena, California replies: "Hello! I have acid reflux and I found that eating one half potato relieves the symptoms quickly. Probably because potatos are high in natural starches, overall, raw potatos have helped me more than prescribed medicine!"
06/02/2009: Seana from Bennett, CO replies: "If you're experiencing constipation after drinking ACV, you'll want to drink more water. You should be drinking about 1/2 your body weight in ounces over the course of your waking hours. So, if you weigh 120lbs, you'll want to consume 60 ounces or 7.5 - 8 ounce glasses over the course of a day.
ACV is a mild cleanse. It gently cleans out your digestive system. If you've never drank it before you may have a lot to eliminate. More water will make your bowel movements softer and easier to pass. It should help with gas, pressure and bloating, too.
Sources: personal experience"
07/09/2009: Sean from Asheville, NC replies: "In terms of adding more acids to your body while experiencing Acid Reflux you may also want to increase your alkaline mineral intake by drinking raw green drink or bone broth. Bitter greens will increase bile production but will strengthen digestion as well as alkalize you. As far as the lower digestive tract and liver pain have you tried colonics and flax/ psyllium/ charcoal stuff, early and late in the day, to promote more regularity? Or maybe only drink ACV water in the morning on an empty stomach. Good Luck!"
[YEA] 01/14/2010: Porky from Metro, Gab replies: "Try taking the ACV with honey (I think 1 tbspn or 1 tsp?) IN 2 tbspn of ACV or 2 tsp and a HUGE glass of H20. This will help lessen the raw stomach feeling or sick feeling with ACV and acid reflux. Won't eliminate it, but eventually you won't need the honey anymore. This helped me I am late 20's and have acid reflux. The ACV DID help SO much, and with energy. I only knew of Braggs prior to this well written article. It costs a bit, so I haven't used in a LONG time, but a hair forumn made me realize that ACV is made by more people than Bragg. I will try the over the counter as long as it is not pasturized since on this forumn someone said that takes away a lot of the good properties.
Much love and blessings and I hope this helps everyone!"
01/14/2010: Porky from Metro, Gab replies: "If you have Acid Reflux, ACV will be TOO strong and TOO harsh on your stomach first thing in the morn with NO food. It may leave you with a sick feeling for up to 10 minutes. It feels not so good, but Try ACV in honey. They say it helps with diabetes taken before a meal, and with other things.
I did it (empty stomach, first thing), but it worried me because it felt SOO like my bod was warning me with the discomfort. But it STILL near cured my acid reflux.
OTHER ACID REFLUX CURES/HUGE HELPS: do NOT lay down after you eat. Sit upright, even laying back a bit is not good enough. Sit as upright as you can for 5 hours after eating ANYTHING. You'll notice you wake up in the morning with 0 buring throat. Also NO SPICES--especially before bed. Even if you sit up right, spices BURN your throat in acid reflux, they'll make your stomach feel raw, bad, and sick--not HUGELY noticeable, but still, kick the spices! I use Morton's Kosher Salt--flavors my food BEAUTIFULLY. Also ramen noodle chicken flavored packets added to water fake chicken stock well! Be sure you ONLY by the ramen noodles with NO transfat and NO MSG's!!!! They exist at grocery stores, you have to check the packaging though!!!! I guess MSG's are Monosodium Gloutamate...I could be wrong, but I KNOW that I want MSG FREE salted stuff! :-)"
01/14/2010: Porky from Metro, Gab replies: "This explains why I got sick and very yuck feeling after ACV, I had an aunt who wouldn't take it because it made her feel sick too. She has GERD and IBS.:

01/15/2010: Lita209 from Sanford, Fl, Usa replies: "I thought I should put couple of references for Apple Cider Vinegar and Body PH.http://naturalmedicine.suite101.com/article.cfm/tips_to_balance_ph
Apple Cider Vinegar and Thieves
Apple cider vinegar is an exception: unlike almost every other vinegar, it has an alkaline ash and improves pH by making the body less acidic.
For that reason alone, it is recommended to replace any vinegar in salad dressings and other recipes with apple cider vinegar, if lemon juice (as above) doesn't provide enough bite.
As a tonic, apple cider vinegar may be taken first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, by combining in a small glass:
1/2 to 1 ounce of apple cider vinegar (or 1-2 tbsp)
1 or more ounces pure water
2 drops Thieves essential oil blend (optional)
Apple cider vinegar is more potent than lemon juice, but still a gradual way to reestablish healthy pH in the body. The Thieves essential oil blend (containing clove, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus, rosemary) give the vinegar an extra immune-boosting kick. It also improves the flavor.
Some people find that if they take the apple cider vinegar and wait too long before eating food, they feel nauseous. It is recommended, but not absolutely necessary, to wait ten minutes before eating.
And this other one is from Ehow.com :http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4673544_apple-cider-vinegar-benefit-health.html
Kill Or Be Killed
One of the biggest things apple cider vinegar is known for is its ability to kill free radicals in the body. Free radicals are the cause of many deadly illnesses such as cancer, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.Balance Is Bliss
Alkalinity is a very important aspect of good health. When the body becomes alkaline, a lot of ailments tend to disappear. Some of these would include headaches, chronic fatigue, constipation, diarrhea, and joint pain. Drinking apple cider vinegar will turn up the body alkaline and help reduce and even eliminate these symptoms altogether.Toughen the Bones
When apple cider vinegar is mixed with fruits, vegetables and meats, it ends up extracting calcium from them. This helps increase bone mineral density. This is beneficial for older people, especially women with osteoporosis.Fruit and Fiber
Apple cider vinegar has a substance in it called pectin, a fruit fiber. This helps to reduce elevated cholesterol levels. To make matters better, it even helps to regulate blood pressure.Twice As Nice
Apple cider vinegar has potassium. This has a two fold benefit. First of all, it helps to strengthen nails and teeth. It stimulates hair growth. It helps alleviate sinusitis and a runny nose. The other thing it does is help eliminate toxins from the body. People who are trying to cleanse or detox their systems can really benefit from this fact.Natural Weight Loss
Apple cider vinegar also aids in weight loss. This is very important to the obese population. It actually emulsifies and helps break down fat cells, causing natural weight reduction as opposed to resorting to more riskier extremes." I just wanted to put my two cents. Salud!!!!!"
01/16/2010: Brian from Ireland replies: "if you check the usda breakdown of apple cider there is no fiber in it. so i doubt this is causing johns (from germantown) side discomfort and constipation. in fact if there was fiber in it, this would help relieve the constipation"
02/23/2010: David from Newburyport, Mass Usa replies: "John from germantown and others experiencing stomach discomfort after taking that particular apple cider vinegar should switch brands. the type of wooden barrel the cider is aged in can contain resin that can get into the applecider. it's not the acv vinegar thats bothering the stomach ie., bloating, cramping and gas pains etc...it's the resin from the barrel !"
07/09/2010: Patrice from Silver Spring, Md replies: "Regarding the "sick" feeling after drinking ACV. I've read that when you ingest an alkalizing substance the process of the acid being neutralized will give you a nauseous feeling. Like drinking a huge 32oz of water first thing in the morning. I can not drink green tea on an empty stomach. I will get very very nauseated and later realized it is because of the alkalizing effect. No medical professional here so I am not 100% sure if what I am saying is true but it makes sense."

My Mom always cooked us a well balanced dinner. By the time I was in my late teens I had severe heartburn and always had antiacids in my pocket. Even kept baking soda in my lunch box.We couldnt afford going to doctors unless it was an emergency. I had insurance when the first brand of Acid Reflux meds came out in the mid 80's. I thought it was a Blessing. Soon I lost my insurance and could buy some over the counter brands. But it always seemed to come back twice as bad when I didnt take anything, and a pack of antiacids only lasted 2 days.I tried 2 teaspoons of acv to 8oz of water 3-4 times a day. It burns going down. So I added 1/4 teaspoon to it. Its been about 2 weeks now. I havnt had to take any meds yet. I have more energy. My sinuses are getting better. But I still have a little heartburn. How can acv be a alkaliser if it says acidity right on the bottle."

[YEA] 08/20/2008: Kristi from Peoria, AZ: "Apple Cider Vinegar has been my miracle cure! I began to suffer from acid reflux this past winter when my gall bladder decided to stop working properly. The pain, weight loss and sleepless nights were making life for me and my family miserable. The side effects from the doctor prescribed PPI's were worse than the reflux. After reading posts from this site in June, I ran out and bought Apple Cider Vinegar supplements from my local health food store. I just couldn't stomach drinking the vinegar straight. After the first supplement, my stomach felt a little calmer, but I thought perhaps it was just wishful thinking. Each day I continued on with the ACV supplements (1 with each meal), and each day the reflux improved. I can now completely control my reflux with ACV supplements and diet, staying away from my trigger foods as much as possible. Sometimes I forget to take the supplements at each meal and still no problems. I also take digestive enzymes and probiotics to aid digestion since my gall bladder has been removed."

It started bad and went to worse very fast. It was so painful I could not swallow. I used to drink apple cider vinegar with hot water and honey daily but because of this goofy diet I was on I stopped. My best friend reminded me of the apple cider vinegar concoction so I tried it. Litterally within an hour my sore throat was gone. I am not sure but I really think I have strep throat. Bottom line is I think it may have cured it. Time will tell but at the very least it aleveated the pain I was experiencing. I love this stuff!!"

[YEA] Rick Anderson : "I'm overweight and often have acid reflux problems. A high-protein/low carb diet definitely works for me in alleviating this acid.... but when I'm bad (eating too late at night or eating too much pastry) I have found that a small glass of apple cider vinegar and water, gulped down, momentarily makes the burning in my esophagus worse--- but then seems to completely get rid of the acid condition. I've tried this several times and each time the results were the same. Rolaids work by neutralizing acid; does vinegar really work by adding more? I don't know, but it does work! One more anecdote: I told someone at my job about it, and she said her grandmother used to swear by it, too: a swig of vinegar helped acid indigestion. She also told me that in the "old days" people would swig some vinegar to see if they had strep throat-- if it burned like hell when it hit the back of the throat, they had it! I would imagine that the acid in the vinegar helped treat the strep, too."
Replies02/16/2009: R from Madison, Ohio replies: "I can see this to be true if and only if using the proper acidity. By adding acid you are throwing your pH balance completely out of whack and causing your body to try balance it. You body doesn't necessarily do that for acid reflux as it doesn't find acid reflux as a strong thing that it needs to release a base to neutralize. If acv is too acidic though, your body will not be able to neutralize it and you will be left in pain."

08/12/2010: Deirdre from Mission, B.c. Canada, British Columbia, Canada replies: "I have arthritis and a naturopath tested that my blood has acid crystals. I checked with Dr. Paul C. Bragg's book "Apple Cider Vinegar Health System" and he advocates = 2 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar with 1 tsp honey in small glass of water, twice a day. Apparently when acid crystals are allowed to harden in joints and tissues, joints become stiff and tissues are hardened. When acv programme is given the precipitated acid crystals enter into a solution form and pass out of the body. Have you any thoughts on this?"
08/12/2010: Alain from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada replies: "Hi Deirdre
Those crystals are probably uric acid crystals. Their accumulations create all sort of problems. The pain in joints is called gout. So look for gout treatment. Eat the least processed food as possible. Don't drink sodas pop. Avoid food with aspartame, msg, any food with high fructose corn syrup, reduce protein... All these are acidic. 60% or more of uric acid is eliminated by the kidneys via the urine. If the urine is acidic a lot less of it will be eliminated. To measure urine acid level you can use pH paper or sticks. You can verify that your urine is most probably acidic (pH lower than 7). The closer the urine pH is to 7, the more you will be able to eliminate uric acid. This is about the best thing I learned for myself. So, learn about alkalizing, search for alkalizing formulas here or on the web, read some of my posts here. Unlike filtered vinegar, good unfiltered raw unpasteurized ACV is alkalizing. But there are better formulas than just ACV alone. Good luck, Alain"
10/17/2010: Alwayssora from Columbia, Tennessee replies: "I am a great fan of ACV. I drink it in iced water. When I had tonsillitis, I mixed it with a bit of honey and swabbed my throat every hour. The white spots would disappear(and my fever) within 24 hours. I had a small wart on the back of my knee and 2 days of soaking it in ACV and it fell off! I use it with Dawn detergent to shampoo my dogs to prevent fleas. It is also good for gradual weight loss, lowering glucose levels, and relieving my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. And the biggie: to stop charley horses at night, I keep a spray bottle of ACV by the bed, and at the first sign of leg cramps, I spray it liberally with ACV. Immediate relief. I even have started spraying my leg before bedtime. NO more cramps! "
[YEA] 10/20/2010: J from St. Louis, Mo replies: "My husband has terrible leg cramps. I had read that ACV would help, so we tried it recently when he had a bad bout with the leg cramps. It seemed to help. We put some in the bath too and he thought that was helpful too. I had read not to put it on the skin, but it did not seem to burn his skin. Have you heard if it is harmful?"
04/03/2012: Taz from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa replies: "I have had such bad bouts of reflux. When I had my gallbladder removed it improved. Bob from Princeton, NJ: "You need to get real apple cider vinegar. Heinz is not real. Go to a health food store - even GNC has ACV w/mother. (Mother is the sediment at the bottom).
Shake well. Add one teaspoon to a glass and add a little less than a mouthful of distilled water. I also add a few drops of cayenne to it. If you have RAW organic honey - a bit of that mixed in can make it taste better. Drink this 10 minutes before meals. Do not drink any more liquid until at least 30 minutes after eating.
Anyone I know who does this no longer has ANY need for Prevacid, etc."

[YEA] Jessica from Escondido, CA: "just read your web site. I have had acid reflux for over a year, and I have refused to take meditation, just using Altoids to try to help it and Milk of Magnesia, but still it didn't go away. I began taking vinegar and honey twice a day for the last two days, and now food doesn't burn when it goes down, and the pain is gone."

I would love to try this with my boyfriend but worry that it MIGHT make things worse. AND also he is on blood pressure medicine for high blood pressure and has asthma, but doesn't take anything for that. But I read some scary things about ACV and lower blood pressure so I wonder what that would do if you were on BL medicine.
Thanks in advance for any answers!"
[YEA] 04/21/2011: Shaina from Bloomington, In replies: "ACV help acid reflux because your body needs more stomach acid. The body may also need more digestable foods. The combination between a poor diet (may be a personal dietary situation, or processed conventional food including pasturized dairy products) that is had to digest and the body not having the resources it needs to produce the stomach acid to fully digest this food. Without enough acid to digest, indigestion (not digesting) occurs and results in burning of the esophagus.Inhibiting stomach acid production with an antacid may halt the burning but will surely increase the digestion problems, probably resulting in constipation or other digestive upset. Would seem better to tackle the source of the issue than to compound stressors, through to each his own. Vitamin C also helps this greatly."
07/16/2011: Lauren from Asheville, Nc replies: "@ Ginger from Moncks Corner, Sc ----Ginger, drinking distilled water is not good. It pulls nutrients out of your cells, tissues, and bones. It is especially bad if used over a long period of time. Here is what just one website says. NOBODY USE DISTILLED WATER!
"- Drinking distilled water over a long period of time will leave you mineral deficient to a certain degree. Manyof the minerals taken into our body are done so through the digestion and absorption are those carried in water.
- When we cook vegetable and other foods in distilled water, the distilled water pulls the minerals out of the them and the nutrient value is lowered.
- Distilled water has zero electrolite value which come from sodium, potassium and chloride. No electrolytes meansdehydration.
- Distilled water absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and it therefore radidly becomes acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes. Acid means a desease environment.
- The less our mineral intake, the greater the risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and a long list of degenerative diseases generally associated with premature aging.
I hope that you are getting the idea. Distilled water contributes to bringing about a mineral deficient and acidenvironment for the body. In fact Cells, tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything to counter act this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood.""
07/17/2011: Robert Henry from Ten Mile, Tn Usa replies: "LOREN, you are right on. In industry, all steam lines must have condensate traps to remove the moisture from the steam. Distilled water is just condensate from steam.Where ever this condensate drips on to the concrete it eats a hole by dissolving the calcium. It does the same for your body only it dissolves every mineral, not just calcium. In your steam cookers or irons you used distilled water because there are no minerals to plate out and plug up your system. We have a water ionizer so we can increase the amount of minerals and pH from our well water. A novice should be leary about drinking distilled water full time."

[YEA] 12/13/2011: Lady Day from Somewhere, In replies: "My daughter turned me on to ACV a while ago. I would like to suggest a WONDERFUL way to consume it. You will look forward to your daily cup if you will try the following:Add 2 teaspoons of ACV to a hot cup of green tea. I sweeten with Sugar in the Raw (turbinado sugar). Add a couple sticks of cinnamon and voila!
Trust me... (1) cup won't be enough. You 'll think you're drinking apple cider and not only are you getting lots of antioxidants, you're lowering your blood pressure, glucose and acidity."
[YEA] 02/03/2012: Gary from Palm Desert, Ca replies: "About 12 years ago, I read that taking a teaspoon of ACV and a teaspoon of honey in an 8 oz glass of water twice a day would help lower cholesterol... I don't know if that helped... but what I do know is that my heartburn and what I later found out was called gerd disappeared.I could be having a severe attack of heartburn and take a teaspoon ACV in a half glass of water and it will immediately disappear.
If I take a teapsoon in an 8 oz or even smaller glass once or twice a day, I almost never experience either heartburn or gerd. I've recommended this to several friends, it has worked for most of them!"
02/24/2012: Derek from Dublin, Ireland replies: "I mix two tablespoons of Braggs ACV with a dash of boiling water in a small bowl, using cotton wool I dab it all over my face every other day. This is fantastic for your skin and complextion. Excellent for acne or uneven skin tone, blemishes etc. Also if you ever get shingles use ACV on them, works amazinly well, a little bit stingy, but results are incredible! Much better than any prescribed creams."
02/25/2012: April from Miami, Fl/usa replies: "I started getting sour taste in mouth an year ago. When it continued for few months I consulted doctor/gastroentrologist and after couple of tests and endoscopy I am diagnosed with GERD and Barrets Oesophagus. Doctor said mine is asymptomatic GERD (as I do not get heartburn my only symptom is sour mouth). I was started on omeprazole 40 mg daily which help most of the day but not always. Me and my husband wanted to start family so my gastroentrologist adviced to stop omeprazole and take tums as and when needed. As my reflux is asymptomatic I am worried about my Barrets getting worse. So I started looking at natural remedies and came across ACV. I started it yesterday. Before going to bed I took 2 tsp ACV 1/8th tsp of baking soda in glass of water. I felt little bloating and warm feeling in my stomach? I am not sure if it is working or not! Is it the right way to consume it? I would also like to know if ACV is safe when trying to conceive or during pregnancy. What is the best way to take it. Do you have any suggestions! Thank you!"
03/12/2012: Tamesha from Manchester, Jamaica replies: "I get yeast infection last week and my aunt told me to sit over hot water with Apple Cider Vinegar in it. What I did was Boil the water, then put it in a bucket then add half bottle of acv. Then sit over it wrap a towel around you so the steam doesn't escape. Just sit over it for 15 mins or more do this 3 times daily. I did it for 5 days now my yeast infection is gone, I also use vagisil creme for the itch. Now am also taking vitamin c pills and eating yogurt and I also drink one glass of water with 1tbp of apple cider vinegar. good luck to those who try it."
04/04/2012: Henr from Ny, Ny Usa replies: "THIS IS A GENERAL COMMENT ABOUT DRINKING ACV:Apple cider vinegar is gross, as any of you who has tried drinking it surely knows. All the posts I have seen say to dilute it with water, but in my opinion that just prolongs the terrible experience of drinking it.
I just tried mixing it with a little bit of cold tonic water (about 1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar to 2-3 tsp tonic) and found that was much better than still water.
I? hope that this doesn't somehow counteract acv's effectiveness, because I've found it to be much less disgusting!"
