In Order of Occurrence

Monster Skate Park Series 2012 at Local Skate Parks
Skateboarders of all abilities and ages are invited to participate in the Monster Skate Park Series. The series travels across San Luis Obispo County and visits six different skate parks to tally points for each skater. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

Easter Egg Hunt 2012 at the Historic Jack House and Gardens
Hippity Hoppity! Join the Easter Bunny for an exciting adventure while searching for prize filled eggs in the Jack House Gardens.

Dive-In Movie 2012: Finding Nemo

Summer Camp Registration Fair 2012
at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices

The annual registration fair provides families with a jump start to registration for 2012 summer camps and programs. Open registration for all summer programs begins May 21

Mother's Day Concert 2012
at the Historic Jack House and Gardens

Enjoy an afternoon of music in the serene Jack House Gardens and take a tour of the historic Victorian home. All mothers attending receive a complimentary flower.

33rd Annual SLO Triathlon at Sinsheimer Park

This short course triathlon (0.5 mile swim, 15.3 mile bike, 3.1 mile run) is a community favorite which accommodates everyone from the novice to the experienced athlete. Visit www.slotriathlon.org for more information.

Movies at the Mission 2011

Free movies at the Mission provide cinematic fun in a unique outdoor setting. Bring a picnic or buy snacks (proceeds go to the SLO SKATEPARK Building Fund).

Bike Rodeo 2011

Bike Rodeo is a bicycle safety event located at Emerson Park (next to the Parks and Recreation Offices off Nipomo Street). Bicycle safety course! NEW Downtown Ride! Goody bags! BMX stunt show! Bike, helmet and waiver required.

The "Haunted" Jack House 2011

The Jack family lived in this house for nearly 100 years, but it has been many a decade since anyone occupied the old place. Strange noises have been heard emanating from these old walls. Could ghosts be hiding in the closets or wandering down stairs? Come find out! Tour the dimly-lit house and learn Jack family history and maybe more. Last tour begins at 3:30 pm. Children 12 & under free.

Howl-O-Ween Hoopla 2011
at Farmer's Market/Garden Street

This fun and safe Halloween event is offered to children during Farmer's Market in Downtown San Luis Obispo. Trick-or-Treat at downtown businesses and stop by Garden Street for carnival games with candy and toys. Also bring a pumpkin for the "Pumpkins on Parade" showcase and be a part of the costume contest.

Reindeer Run 5K Run/Walk 2011 at Mitchell Park
The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to host the first REINDEER RUN at Mitchell Park! The 5K route is perfect for runners and walkers of all abilities. Enjoy breakfast with Santa at the Senior Center immediately following the run. Event T-shirt and breakfast ticket included. Holiday themed costumes encouraged and the best costume wins a prize! Additional breakfast with Santa tickets can be purchased for $5/kids, $7/adults.

Holiday in the Plaza
The annual art and craft show in Mission Plaza, Downtown San Luis Obispo, is now being produced by a local promoter, Mike Knapp. The show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, December 3 and December 4. Vendors and attendees can find more information on the website www.thecraftfair.org or by contacting Mike directly at thecraftfair@charter.net.


Victorian Christmas 2011 Open House and Candlelight Tours
Come enjoy the splendor of a Victorian Christmas with docent-led tours of the historic Jack House. Following tours, hot cider and cookies are served in the Victorian kitchen and visitors may enjoy unique items in the Wash House Gift Shop. *Kids under 12 free

Community/Major Special Events
Many special events are held throughout San Luis Obispo annually ranging from fun runs, festivals, parades, crafts fairs and more. For more information on any of the events on the calendar, contact Shannon Bates, Recreation Manager, at (805) 781-7296.

Anyone wishing to sponsor a special event within the City of San Luis Obispo must complete a Special Events Permit Application as well as all applicable items listed on the special event approval checklist (page 1 of the application). The application must be received at least 90 days prior to the event. All special event fees applicable to your event are determined by the fee policy included in the Special Events Ordinance.

Street Banner Permits

Street banners are an effective marketing tool for upcoming special events. Two downtown locations are available: the intersection of Higuera and Chorro and the intersection of Marsh and Carmel.

Banner Availability Calendar

  • Application and appropriate fees are required to reserve a week-long space.
  • Reserve a banner for 2012 starting Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at
    8 a.m.
    at the P&R Department.
  • 2012 applications received prior to January 4, 2012 will be returned.

  • Please check the banner policy and availability calendar prior to completing the banner application.
  • 2012 Fees are $184 (includes $8 permit processing fee).
  • If your organization is applying to advertise multiple events, please complete one application per event.
  • Banners are permitted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Completed banner permits and check are required to hold each week-long space.
  • NOTE: The minimum size a banner can be is 3 ft. x 8 ft. and the maximum is 4 ft. x 24 ft. Banners not meeting minimum requirements WILL NOT BE HUNG.

The Parks and Recreation Department provides several special events focusing on enjoyable family entertainment. Collaborative efforts with a variety of entities produce the San Luis Obispo Triathlon and the Old Fashioned 4th of July.
