Tramadol Drug Information
TRAMADOL
COMMON
TRAMADOL USES:
Tramadol
is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. Tramadol
also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions
such as cancer or joint pain. Tramadol works by decreasing the brain's
perception and response to pain. It also reduces the size or magnitude
of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. Tramadol is
sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist
for more information.
BEFORE
USING TRAMADOL:
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Tramadol.
INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter
medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING
OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking "blood
thinners"
such as warfarin, appetite suppressants (such as phenylpropanolamine,
phentermine or benzphetamine), certain medicine for mood or mental
disorders (such as olanzepine, clozapine, haloperidol, loxapine,
molindone, or thiothixene), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
antidepressants (such as fluoxetine, sertraline, or paroxetine),
tricyclic
antidepressants (such as amitriptyline or imipramine), monoamine
oxidase inhibitors (such as furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide,
phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, or tranylcypromine),
quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin), narcotic
analgesics (such as codeine or morphine), phenothiazines (such as
promethazine or thioridazine), sleeping medicines (such as zolpidem
or temazepam), bupropion, cyclobenzaprine, carbamazepine, or nefazodone.
Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history
of seizures,
head injury or trauma, breathing problems (such as asthma), bowel
problems,
allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF Tramadol is not
recommended if you have severe bowel problems (such as pseudomembranous
colitis).
Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns
about using Tramadol.
HOW
TO USE TRAMADOL:
Follow the directions for using Tramadol provided by your
doctor. Tramadol MAY BE TAKEN WITH FOOD if it upsets your stomach.
STORE Tramadol at room temperature, away from heat and light.
IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF TRAMADOL, take it as soon as possible. If
it
is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back
to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once.
TRAMADOL CAUTIONS : DO NOT TAKE Tramadol
IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION
to
codeine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine, or oxycodone (such as Tylox,
Tylenol with Codeine, vicodin). A severe allergic reaction includes
a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you
have a question about whether you are allergic to Tramadol, or if
a certain medicine contains codeine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine,
or oxycodone, contact your doctor or pharmacist. IF YOU EXPERIENCE
difficulty breathing, tightness
of chest, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop
a rash
or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more doses
of Tramadol unless your doctor tells you to do so. DO NOT EXCEED
THE RECOMMENDED DOSE OR TAKE Tramadol for longer than prescribed.
Exceeding the recommended dose or taking Tramadol for longer than
prescribed may be habit-forming. If using Tramadol for an extended
period of time, DO NOT SUDDENLY STOP taking Tramadol without your
doctor's approval. Your dose may need to be slowly lowered to avoid
side effects. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS,
EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you
are using Tramadol. AVOID ALCOHOL while you are using Tramadol.

DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Tramadol. Using Tramadol
alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability
to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. IP DIZZINESS
