The Washington Post Co. is a diversified education and media company. The company provides educational services to individuals, schools and businesses through its subsidiary, Kaplan, Inc. Its programs include higher education, test preparation, language instruction and professional training. The company operates principally in three areas of the media business: Cable Television, Newspaper Publishing, and Television Broadcasting. The Cable Television operations consist of cable systems offering video, Internet, phone and other services to subscribers in midwestern, western and southern states. The Newspaper publishing includes the publication of newspapers in the Washington, DC, area and Everett, WA; newsprint warehousing; and the company's electronic media publishing business primarily washingtonpost.com and Slate. The Television Broadcasting operations are conducted through six VHF television stations serving the Detroit, Houston, Miami, San Antonio, Orlando and Jacksonville television markets. It was founded by Stilson Hutchins in 1877 and is headquartered in Washington, DC.
